Love (and hate) In An Elevator

I know, I know. We’re all sick to death of the story of Elevator Guy (I refuse to call it ElevatorGate, come on people, that hasn’t been funny since CrackerGate). That is to say we’re so sick of it that we feel compelled to read every blog and watch every video we find on the topic and then pontificate on the subject at length in the comments section in the most smug, sarcastic and polarising manner possible. That goes for people on…

Feminism and Organized Religion

Sure, fine, I give in. I hate re-posting from my livejournal, because it seems redundant when someone can just go directly to the livejournal, but since posting my livejournal link as a blog post is bad and posting this (what I've written below) isn't considered a forum post, I have been given no choice. -.-

For me, a religious feminist is an oxymoron. Christianity, Islam, and Judaism are one in the same.  Of all the people who should be, at the very least, against organized…

The Seedy Religious Underbelly of South Africa

In the last couple of years I have experienced a gradual but rude awakening to the grizzly, spine-tingling reality of South Africa's religious situation.

The existence of Bible translations into KiSwahili, isiXhosa, Zulu, Chichewa, Tswana, Shona etc is frightening. African cultures notoriously cling to superstitions as well as ancestral and tribal beliefs. Combining this with Christianity is resulting in an ongoing history of bad ideas. I have covered many of these issues before, but… Continue

Getting my Panties in a Bunch over a Not-That-Innocent Super Bowl ad.

Yesterday I allowed myself to get riled up about the Tebow family's Focus on the Phallic - er Family - Anti-Choice- oops - Pro-Life Super Bowl ad. I try my best to avoid rants on my Hot-For-Jesus Former Fundie blog. Rants just polarize the issue and cause eyes to glaze over. Whenever something pops up worthy of an opinion… Continue

The Woman's Role in the Home

I've been writing this series over on my blog http://AngietheAntiTheist.blogspot.com I've put this passage in it's entirety here, and the links for comments on this post, and follow-up posts in the series, are provided at the end.

Looking at "The Woman's Role in the Home" by Christian homeschooling mother Rachel Harkins makes me want to wash out my eyes with bleach. Or acid.

I enjoy coming up with acrostics…

Aggressive Atheism — Are Atheists Too Militant Towards Christians in the US?

Are Atheists Too Offensive Towards Christians?

A very interesting blog titled “Women in the atheism community, or lack thereof” (which has now recently closed to new comments) has lots of participation on the topic of the low numbers of openly atheist women. One poster suggested that maybe it was some of the aggressive, in-your-face prominent spokesmen for atheism — including anti-choice sexist bigots like Christopher Hitchens and dyed-in-the-wool misogynists like Bill… Continue

Feminism and Islam

I recently came across a Muslim website called submission.org. “Submission”, is the literal translation of the word “Islam”, and it refers to the believer’s obligation to blindly follow whatever god commands him. In Judaism there is a similar injunction referred to as the “yoke of the kingdom of heaven”. It is the belief that only god decides how we should live, and we are not allowed to disobey whether we like it or not . While all religions stress this… Continue
