Alabama Church Sentencing Option: azcentral.com
News like this shouldn't/doesn't surprise me when it comes rolling out on the red carpet but it does get my blood going. It goes without saying that news like this coming out of Alabama is all the less surprising.
Ready for a synopsis?
As of Oct. 1st, 2011 a city program will allow a city judge in…

Care must be taken to draw a distinction between a rational idea and an emotional truth. A rational idea is a construct of the conscious mind. An emotional truth is an expression of human feeling. It's just what someone feels to be true.
Jesus Christ never gave religious law in the tradition of the old religion (the Law of Moses) or Islamic law. He spoke in cryptic imagery and enigmatic parables. As a consequence, Christianity has no rational expression. It is pure…Continue
Republican presidential wannabe Rick Perry has no regard for science, alleging that man-made global warming is a hoax, and that creationism ought to be taught in classrooms. Here are some of his Godly ravings. Let them be a warning. And what does it say about the US political system that things get so bad that (nearly) every Republican front runner has to be a moron and that the Republicans aren't political pariahs despite this? Amongst the Republican candidates the only ones that believe in…Continue
I'm getting ready to "come out" to my family and church. I've written a letter to send to the church or any family member in the event that I cannot personally talk with them for fear of my own safety. I intend to go about this in the least dramatic way possible, and only use this letter if I have to. If there is any drama, it will be caused by the church or by my family- not by me. I played a very active role in the church (I'm their best worship leader, they keep saying), so I expect some…Continue
Good afternoon everyone! I hope you’re all having a great day. Despite a rather shaky start to the day, everything is now going well and I just read a great article inThe Vancouver Sun, titled …Continue

When it comes to its education standards, Texas has had a lot of bad luck these last few years.
Whether they were contending with a willfully ignorant dentist whom Texas Governor Rick Perry somehow thought was qualified to chair the State Board of Education (SBoE) and who…Continue

Near the end of the first act of Kander and Ebb’s musical “Cabaret”, the character Herr Schultz observes, “How the world can change, it can change like that, due to one little word: ‘Married.’” Just a little over two weeks ago, on June 24, 2011, it seemed as if the world had changed “like that.” The State of New York extended the legal right to marry to same-sex couples—something it had declined to…Continue

Back in 1999 I found myself out of a job with time on my hands. To amuse myself and, perhaps, contact others with my condition (Sleep Associated Altered States of Consciousness...night terrors, OBEs in the popular vernacular. I had been troubled with these experiences for years but I stubbornly continued to believe that I was a competent judge of my own experiences. Ten years before I had decided that, rather than fight against these things, I would go along with…Continue

I was wondering if anyone else thought this was a good idea.
So I was chatting online (Omegle) and I came across this bible beater (looking for cybersex... hmm...) and he said that atheists were satan worshippers and we never did anything as a community. Firstly, I reminded him that we have no churches in which to congregate and plan. Then I remembered. We have Think Atheist. This entire site is like our "church". Just because we don't see each other every week, doesn't mean we can't…Continue

I decided to do a survey on Facebook to see how people felt about 1) the phrase 'Under God' being removed from the Pledge, and 2) creationism being taught in schools.
Here are the two questions I asked:
1. Should 'under God' be removed from the Pledge of Allegiance?
2. Should creationism be taught in public schools?
Both answers should include why or why not, not simply yes or no.
Here are some of the answers I…Continue
Okay, we've all seen them Those message boards out front of churches where they put up a new message every so often. Well around here we've had a few ridiculous ones lately.
"The trees are green, the birds are back, God did it again!" Seriously? Do these people seriously not know how the seasons work?
The newest on is pretty silly. "Save gas, walk with God."
I thought this might be a good place we could share the ridiculous quotes we see. So,…Continue
Unbelievable...the governor of Texas, Rick Perry openly did a "rain prayer"....where the hell is this world coming to when the governor of one of the most powerful states in the union does a "rain prayer"....does this violate the 1st amendment?? What the hell is going on with our country??
Billy Graham and many, many other Christian people get together to host "Rock The Fort." A convention full of Jesus-lovers that takes place on America's military bases. Now, you would think that the separation of church and state would apply here but good 'ol America ignored that part and funded the event.
From Rock Beyond Belief…Continue
This is from 2009, so many have probably seen it. A pretty good speech by actor Stephen Fry (who will appear in the next Robert Downey Jr. Sherlock Holmes movie) against the current state of the Catholic religion/nation. Soon I will see Stephen Fry accept an award in Harvard Square.…
These are probably bogus, but they are funny nonetheless. Supposedly, all of these statements appeared in real church bulletins or were announced during a service.
The Fasting & Prayer Conference …
