Nativity Naivete

(cross posted from http://letreasonreign.wordpress.com/2012/12/25/nativity-naivete/#more-549)

Well Saturnalia is over–and I didn’t even get to see Saturn.

So I guess I will have to focus on Christmas instead.

The overwhelming majority of well educated Christians realize that there’s no evidence, not even from the bible, that this day is in any way the birthdate of Jesus.  I’ve heard…

CHRISTMAS MIRACLES OR GOD'S PSYCHOSES?

What is the fascination with "Christmas Miracles?" Is this simply ignorant reporters searching for a catchy headline in order to draw readers to their story or is there more to it? It seems that always around Christmas the number of divine interventions increases. These alleged "miracles" make the headlines and perpetuate the silly notion that God has somehow stepped maneuvered in on the affairs of mere mortals and made something a little better.

But here's the rub: most of the time,…

Holiday Toast

My wife and I are probably having my parents over for diner on Christmas, so I was sitting and remembered about how my dad likes to joke about saying grace in the name of fun. He always says it jokingly and is really just trying to get my mom to lighten up about the issue a little and realize my non-belief is fine and that the fact of me being a good person is what matters. He never actually says grace at hope or anywhere, so he actually has no intentions of saying it or joining in. But it…

Willful ignorance

I love Christmas time. The general kindness from people around me makes me feel all warm and fussy.

I'm the only atheist in my family, but it really hasn't bothered me, since they've never seemed fundamental or intrusive in any way. I announced my atheism about a year ago, and all I got was a "why", which I answered as well as I could, and then an "ok", and that was pretty much it. I've always lived a pretty secular life, so my lifestyle didn't change much, but my way of looking at…

The WAR on CHRISTmas!

I'm so sick of hearing about "the war on christmas" and seeing any

non-christian (or anyone willing to stand up for any non-christian)

being vilified in the news. Tonight there was a segment on one of my local news affiliates (WTAE Pittsburgh) about a nativity scene being moved from in front of the borough building in a local town after one woman (bravely) wrote in and asked that it be moved. It was moved a whole 20 yards from it's original… Continue

Pastor publicly executes christmas elf in protest against Satan's minions

John Knudsen, a Danish pastor at the Løkken Free Church in Vendsyssel,

has dealt the first blow against an enemy that he believes to be one of

greatest threat to Christmas. It is, of course, the Elf.

Many people imagine elves as Santa's little helpers making toys for

children or magical folk from Germanic and Norse Folklore, but not John

Knudsen. He believes that they are "poltergeists that come from the devil and make children sick" and that the decorating… Continue

Christmas

I don't like christmas. I stopped liking christmas long before I became an atheist. Christians took the fun out of it many years ago for me. The rituals the solemn assemblies to reflect on some guy getting beat to a pulp and crucified for "me". How I owed this guy so much and I needed to be nice to everyone for this one special day. It was special because of what "he" did for me. I never bought into that and it just seemed wrong. I never taught it to my children. I give them presents but that's… Continue

Christian Voice call for Ban on Twilight's Calendar.

Christian Voice says mixing religion with the cult vampire series is ‘deeply offensive’ to Christians.

‘It’s sickening to see the message of Jesus Christ being hijacked to peddle a brand like Twilight, which to all intents and purposes proclaims an anti-religious cult,’ said Stephen Green, national

director of the group.

Read the ful article and the first leg of my correspondance with 'Christian Voice' here:…

Introducing The True Meaning of Christmas: Sparkly Jesus

Well everyone, it seems as though we did get it all wrong. While shopping I came across this gem of the holiday season and, clearly, the true meaning of christmas: sparkly jesus.

Honestly, this is some peoples idea of worship and praising their…

A Christmas Carol - More Like a Christmas Crisis

Animated and in 3D, Charles Dickens’ beloved holiday story, A Christmas Carol, spills onto screens again. A garish demonstration of the capabilities of the new 3D technology, the story only pops out when it possesses an opportunity to show off the technology.

Scrooge (Jim Carrey) is a miserly old man who holds tight each penny in his pocket. After his business partner, Marley (Gary Oldman) dies, Scrooge loses all perspective, turning even surlier than he was before. Devoid of all… Continue

The Atheist's Guide To Christmas

This was originally posted over at my blog, Cubik's Rube.

If you want to know what I think of the Atheist's Guide to Christmas, a book that's just been released, which was put together by the lovely Ariane Sherine (organiser of the Atheist Bus Campaign) and which features essays from many of the grooviest godless guys and gals of our time,… Continue

It's Christmas time

Well, this post is maybe not really an atheistic one, but I think, it could interest you anyway.

I even couldn't trust my eyes when I went home from work today. In the Bern central station, they already hung up Christmas decoration!

If found some more pictures in this blog.

Though I'm an atheist, I usually don't feel harassed by Christmas… Continue
