So the Pope said I can go to heaven...

...and that's pretty cool of him.

I knew there was a reason I wasn't trolling this guy's Twitter account.

Now, I'm no fan of the job, in general. But this guy seems alright!

My good works are animal adoption charities, veterans programs and of course, my Plant a Row Program,…

Thank you for your support!

The staff of Think Atheist asked the community to support one of our own– me!– in the goal of raising money for the Light the Night walk I participated in tonight. The money raised for this walk went to the Leukemia Lymphoma Society. I met survivors tonight as well as people who were walking for loved ones they had lost, and it was an incredibly humbling and touching experience.

I am so grateful to those of you who shared the link and/or donated to this great cause.…

Tale of Two Fathers Which Art (Not) In Heaven: My Charles Dickens Versus Paul Ryan's Ayn Rand

I've been waiting for years for Paul Ryan to be named on the 2012 GOP Presidential ticket.  I had tiny worries of Santorum or fellow Minnesotans Bachmann and Pawlenty being serious considerations, but have anticipated that Paul Ryan would be the BoyWonder they would pick in the end. …

Eggs for the Kids at Kasese Humanist Primary School Fundraiser

I've been working with Bwambale Robert, the project director of the Kasese Humanist Primary School in Uganda on a way to get more nutritious meals to their young students

I'm pleased to announce the launch of a two-phase project to get a large secure coop built on the school!  Chickens mean eggs.…

The Upside Down Nature of Church Budgets

Imagine receiving this pitch from the American Cancer Society:

"Donate $100 today, and $15 of it will go directly to cancer research and to alleviate the suffering of cancer patients! Better still, $50 of it will be used to pay a lecturer who holds weekly meetings to explain why cancer is bad, why donating to the Society is good, and what cancer patients did to give themselves the disease! The other $35 will pay for our building, our other staff, general overhead, fundraising costs and… Continue

Prayer vs. Work

I've got an online friend who's been having it rough lately. Dialysis, loss of work, bills piling up, you get the idea. As a friend it's hard to see someone having a hard time, knowing that you can't fix it for them.… Continue

For the first time in Australian legal history, the Parliament's Senate Economics Committee is investigating tax law amendments that might (if enacted) close a loophole exploited by religious organisations.

Currently, Australian Tax Office (ATO) automatically grants tax free status to organisations that make "supernatural claims". This means Catholics, Hindus, Muslims,… Continue

Non-Believers Giving Aid: Support for the Haiti Tragedy and Beyond

Non-Believers Giving Aid: a religion-free way to help disaster victims

Spurred by the horrific suffering in Haiti, the Richard Dawkins Foundation for Reason and Science (RDFRS) has joined forces with 13 other freethought groups or associates, to collect donations to non-religious relief organizations. Those participating are Atheist Alliance International, Atheists Helping the Homeless, Atheists… Continue

Atheist charity

One area in which the religious claim a superiority to atheists is in the performance of good deeds and charitable works. They really seem to think they have this one licked.

I get very annoyed at this claim for two reasons:

1. An act of charity is self-serving for a religious person in that a reward is anticipated from whatever sky-daddy is involved, be it virgins, raisins, favoured celestial seating arrangements or the like. (Actually I think virgins are only doled out… Continue

You Need Religion To Have Morals?

This is taken from The Friendly Atheist which, by the way, is one of the best Atheist blogs on the web so if you don't already read it, you should start. Great story that spits right in the face of the whole "without religion, people would have no morals" BS we hear from theists so often. Here's a link to the post.

Why the Will is Not Free

Human beings have a powerful sense of free will, and in at least one important sense, they are responsible for their actions. Despite this, however, the concept of free will as it is commonly understood is baseless and incoherent. It is certainly true, of course, that when beings make choices, it feels to them as though a variety of outcomes are possible. In fact, however, only the actual outcome was ever really a possibility. For a different choice to have been… Continue

Beingist Philosophy

These are the basic premises intended to define Beingism. Beyond the content of the text here, Beingists may come to a variety of different conclusions. Other texts on this site, such as the essays, blog posts, and message board postings, may contain ideas widely shared among Beingists, though this cannot necessarily be… Continue
