Dealing with cancer is easier than dealing with the "prayers"

I was recently diagnosed with stage III malignant Melanoma (it is in my lymph nodes) and yes it is difficult and of course I'm terrified that I might miss out on some amazing future events.  The biggest problem I am having right now is dealing with people who want to "save" me and "pray" for me.  I was actually told that without "god" I cannot be cured.  I take solace in the fact that due to my belief system I live my life and fight to live rather than pray and hope for some imaginary…

I give blood because I am good without <insert deity>

I give blood because I want to help other humans.  Not many people know that some types of cancer require a patient to have a full blood transfusions.  In years before my decision to give blood, I would join the 10k Cancer Research run (…

Winter Beast

Did you know that the artist who made the Wall Street Bull was never paid? Taurus the Bull

Taurus is a bull, well half of a bull anyway. The front half. Actually mostly the head, with a shiny red eye. I think he’s been drinking. He’s charging Orion who appears to be perfectly prepared to defend himself from the assault. Orion also appears to have lost his pants but we don’t talk about…

Thank you for your support!

The staff of Think Atheist asked the community to support one of our own– me!– in the goal of raising money for the Light the Night walk I participated in tonight. The money raised for this walk went to the Leukemia Lymphoma Society. I met survivors tonight as well as people who were walking for loved ones they had lost, and it was an incredibly humbling and touching experience.

I am so grateful to those of you who shared the link and/or donated to this great cause.…

These are HUGE game changers in our evolution as a species. We are the first...the very first creatures in known existence that can willfully control our reproduction.

Medical advances snowball. All it takes is one good advance, one leap of science to cause an…

Praying for Hitchens

Christopher Hitchens is one of the few people in this world that I truly look up to. What makes me look up to him? Because he says that we should not have any idols or put anyone else in too high of regard. So in that sense I admire him for a quality that he possesses.

As you may know, last month my man Hitch announced that he had cancer. The cancer is in his esophagus and from everything I've read it has a relatively low survival rate because it is… Continue

This Guy Is Kind Of A Jerk.

Trying to find some news about the prognosis of Christopher Hitchens’ condition, I stumbled upon this little piece posted today by Andrew Sullivan, Hitch's Cancer.

Here’s his whole post:

I'm devastated by the news. We need Christopher around for a long, long time. I do not know the details and understand his need for privacy. But he seems in good spirits if…
