TV shows I've been watching this season - and my thoughts on the atheism/religion-related moments!
Okay some of what I discuss below is more about a lack of belief in an afterlife or in other supernatural things rather than a lack of belief in gods or religion. FYI.
~~~
So I haven't been on this site much lately. It was essential when I first accepted the fact that I was an atheist and became more sure of my lack of belief in all gods/religions, 3-and-a-half years ago. I brought my dad and younger brother into this anti-theistic, "religion actually is really horrible and…
Coming out relgious
We have all watched and read accounts of atheists coming out to their families, but I am curious if there are equal accounts of people coming out as religious to their atheist families?
This title is a bit misleading, I think. The article is not about ethics really. Rather it is just a general overview of secularism in different places. -- Dallas
Atheism on the upswing in America
by Greg Paul
Some years back Washington Post Magazine ran a then-rare story on a strange and scarce species. A kind of person most Americans are so bigoted against that they refuse to vote for them, marry them, or even allow them into the…
Encouraging Young YouTube Atheists
I think that it's important that we support young atheists who have found a voice on Youtube. For many of them, it's the first time they've found the courage to speak out publicly.
Their fledgling channels only rarely show up in searches, which translates to few views, which can be discouraging. I thought it would be a good idea to help them along as many of them are "coming out" for the first time.
My suggestion: …
Atheists can help too.
I was wondering if anyone else thought this was a good idea.
So I was chatting online (Omegle) and I came across this bible beater (looking for cybersex... hmm...) and he said that atheists were satan worshippers and we never did anything as a community. Firstly, I reminded him that we have no churches in which to congregate and plan. Then I remembered. We have Think Atheist. This entire site is like our "church". Just because we don't see each other every week, doesn't mean we can't…
Is it worth our time trying to reason with the emotionally minded people that are religious?
By Philip Sober
I'm an atheist and have been out spoken about it and heard all the nonsense regarding that fact by the religious, such as, I'm a fundie atheist or atheism is my religion, etc... but lately I've questioned my own tactics. What i mean by that is this, as an atheist, I'm also fairly scientific minded, for an uneducated layman that is.
I've come to the rational belief, in the philosophy of…
How we get the labeled "angry atheists"
Sometimes, people get heated during a conversation. It could be about [the nonexistence] of god, abortion, eugenics, universal healthcare, or any other controversial subject but things can't turn sour at any given moment...
Last night, I was contacted by my best friend [who is Christian] who pointed me in the direction of a facebook conversation that had been taking place. Two of the people who were involved were friends of mine (we will call them J & N -N being a…
Magazine Update #1
I love the responses about the magazine! I knew there would be some creative people on here just itching to get some of their stuff out for others to see.
The plan is to get a pool of talent together and once there are people who will be serious about this involved, we'll get to particulars. Right now I'm trying to wrangle some folks (we truly are like herding cats!)to see how much content can be created. If you read this and are interested, message me, reply to this, twitter me,…
Would anyone be interested in contributing to a magazine?
One of my dreams in life was to have my own magazine. For years I toiled with what to make a magazine about. After a few false starts, I've finally come up with a concept for a magazine.
I want a magazine by and for atheists, free thinkers, humanists, and sprinkle it with some tech and nerdy stuff. After stumbling upon this website, I've realized that we atheists need as many outlets to broadcast the issues and causes we stand behind as we can get. I would like this magazine to…
A few weeks ago my father passed away. Like me he was an Atheist. Like me he had been one since he was a young man. I was six when I “became” one, or rather realized, like with Santa, the Easter Bunny,
ghosts and all, it was all made up.
So in keeping with my father’s wishes we had a non-religious funeral. I gave the eulogy. I spoke about his life. What he had…
