Massimo Pigliucci Speaks about Science & Religion

This past Sunday I had the pleasure of hearing Massimo Pigliucci give a presentation titled, “What’s Science got to do With It? When Scientists talk Nonsense about Science and Religion”. Pigliucci is a professor of ecology and evolution at the State University of New York at Stony Brook, is an outspoken critic of creationism, an advocate of science education, and has a doctorate in genetics, a Ph.D. in botany, and a Ph.D. in philosophy. He writes for the Skeptical Inquirer,…

Religion's Ultimate Sin - Childhood Indoctrination

I recently got into a fairly heated debate with one of my children's aunts regarding religion. She was apparently appalled by the fact that I've been doing my best to shield them (ages 4 and 2) from religion and that I took issue with her teaching them about the Bible while watching them one day. When I learned about it I told her, pretty bluntly, that I did not want her shilling her religious beliefs off on my children and if she wished to babysit them in the future to please respect those… Continue

Discovering the secularist cause (New article at Examiner)

Here's my latest at Examiner.com, under my new title, "DC Secularism Examiner." It's a brief history of what brought me to writing about atheist activism.

A taste:

As I put my career in professional theatre temporarily aside (populated by a generally liberal and socially tolerant demographic) and toward politics, I came to realize that while my own…

My new atheist column at Examiner.com

I haven't checked back at Think Atheist in a while, and partly this is because I have been busy working on my new column at Examiner.com where I am the "DC Political Atheist Examiner."

If you haven't been by, I'd love for everybody to check it out.

Here are some recent highlights:

Atheism and Society

I am an atheist because it logically makes sense. I am an atheist because science matches it. I trust experiments that have been correctly conducted and are unbiased. I am an atheist because it is the only thing that gives me hope that a secular America (blasphemous, I know) would be full of sensible people. I am so tired of this religious shit. Religion is used to manipulate millions of young and old thoughts, dreams, hopes, and expectations. Religion is only a tool of control. Nothing more,… Continue

The Fallout

Even as a young child, I despised church. Church meant itchy dresses, uncomfortable pews, and two hours I could have better spent playing outdoors. Being a child, I never understood gOd in the way Christians want gOd to be understood. To me, gOd was like a friendly old man in the clouds, the same way Santa Clause was a friendly old man in the North Pole. And I don’t remember a thing about Jesus. As far as I knew, Jesus was Starbuck to gOd’s Ahab.

Religion was never my turn-on.… Continue

Death

Conservation, Laws of Physical -laws stating that some property of a closed system is unaltered by change in the system; it is conserved. The most important are the laws of conservation of matter and energy. Mass and energy are interconvertible according to the equation E = mc2; what is conserved is the total mass and its equivalent in energy.

((Matter/Energy cannot be lost or destroyed. It is simply converted)

False Choices, or, How to Win Lawsuits and Marginalize People

[From Bloc Raisonneur]

I am interested in the Christian Broadcasting Network's take on the Newdow Pledge suit, because even though they will have a naturally built-in bias, they are a significant player in terms of niche media, and their political reporting… Continue

"Under God" and Compulsory Unity

[From Bloc Raisonneur]

Radley Balko at the Agitator and Jason Kuznicki at Positive Liberty wonder at the wisdom of Michael Newdow and other atheists' attempts to strike "under God" from the Pledge of Allegiance. Their beef? Per Balko:

Seems to me that the real problem here—whether you’re atheist, agnostic, or devout—is the idea that we’re forcing school…

atheism on the TV

Atheism featured twice on Australian TV tonight.

First on the ABC nightly news where they discussed the UK Atheist Bus Campaign, and how the Australian one had been knocked back [by the advertising company, they could end up with heaps of flack because of this].

Secondly on SBS RocKwiz program, contestants reason he didn't guess "The Lords Prayer" by Sister Janet Mead - "atheist".

I've put the links to the on-line vids on my blog (shameless blog promotion)

Science is NOT a religion!

I'm sick of Christians confusing Atheism with Satanism. Unlike religion, Atheism is based in science which is nothing more than unbiased observation of the universe around us. Everyone in the world, religious or not, "practices" science all the time just by observing their surroundings and forming an opinion.

Religion, on the other hand, is the magical mythology created to explain any gaps that we find in our observation. An Atheist would describe such a gap as "unkown", and wait for… Continue

Condescend to the Messenger

David Waters of WashingtonPost.com's On Faith blog takes a mostly-fair look at Michael Newdow's inauguration lawsuit by seeing what effect the messengers have on the substance of the case.

. . . I suspect the lawsuit would have generated less condescension if it had been filed by the…

Rev. Lowrey: Newdow Victory Could Destroy America

Michael Newdow's case against God-invocations at the presidential inaugural is going to court. No, really. It's getting a real live hearing. Per the Washington Examiner:

A Drank Conversation with my Best Friend

I'm new to the community. Running on little sleep, lots of post-holiday annoyances, and a handful of sodas that should have been diet and caffeine free. Regardless, I stumbled here... took in some great reads and made a handful of replies. I've got a bit of a formal dash to my writing as I'm polishing off the last year of a liberal arts degree. <-- I'm boring, but my story is interesting.

Having come back to my hometown from about 90 miles away, I was glad to see my friends. Of… Continue

Pull the curtain...

A atheist friend brought this up and I thought I would share it. "Atheists need to come up with a fake religion and convince hundreds of thousands of people to join it. When we gain hundreds of religious members, we pull the curtain and let everyone that joined know that it was all made up, and show people how easy it is to be convinced to live a certain reality, even if that reality is not real. Just a thought."

I've Lost My MySpace and Some Friends

Due to a minor infraction at MySpace.com (ie. being an atheist and speaking out,) my account was deleted. I opened another account, just to keep in touch with old friends, and marked it 'private'.

So far only a few have accepted my friend request.

While this could be a coincidence, I can't help feeling that some of them just couldn't reconcile my beliefs .. or, non-beliefs. I was never critical of them directly, but I made quite a few anti-evangelical postings (usually… Continue
