My brother, an atheist like me, posed to me this humorous thought experiment, and I thought it was worth playing the game and posting it here:
God - the bearded white guy who looks a lot like me (he wears more robes than I do) - turns up on Earth, having decided to prove his omnipotence once and for all.
He turns up everywhere you go, in all your recent photos, and in all the morning… Continue

My cat, spooky, has gone missing. He's been gone for 5 days now, and while I am quite worried he may have been hurt, or worse, killed or caught by the cat-catcher, I still hold hope that he's about, and that he will return soon. He's done this before, but never for so many days, and I suspect he may have another home out there somewhere. Damn cats and their curiosity! It never comes to any good! Whenever he goes missing, I can't help but think of the saying "Curiosity killed the… Continue

I hate posting this because it might make me look like a complete idiot, but I don't know much about physics and this is just my observation. I was thinking that undergraduate students must have already their professors this question, if not people like me before and considered it. I mean it must not be that easy because then there wouldn't be a problem connecting quantum physics, with gravity, and electromagnetism, etc. In the quantum world, time could move so fast that we can't comprehend… Continue

Sometimes I like to think that good things do happen for a reason, like there truly is some manner of fate pulling on our strings. But then I thought... Why can't good things just... Happen? Who is to say that the physical laws of our universe can't simply create an event that I perceive as good?
Some people try to imagine a godless universe and suddenly everything is terrible. But really, the only thing that has changed is your perspective. There is still good, still bad, and your… Continue

was it the big bang meaning the universe came from a singularity, or some other way? There are a lot of theories out there, and I'd like to see how many on TA believe in the same or same type of "beginning"
Thanks in Advance :)

In my recent interview with PZ Myers
, when asked "Is atheism even something you think about, or is it merely part of having an informed knowledge of the universe and its workings?" he stated:
"Atheism is a natural conclusion of rational and scientific thinking."
Bingo! He hit the nail on the head, and… Continue

Is there a sense of determinism in the universe? Does the universe have a purpose?
My personal understanding of the universe is that there is no definite purpose for the universe, merely that the universe is a result of a series of events, which were the series of a previous series of events, which in turn, are the result of a previous series of… Continue

We are all born onto this Earth as the product of a mother and a father in a more-or-less helpless state. From the moment of birth we depend upon those around us to feed us and protect us from the ravages of the outside world. Unlike most other species on the planet who are born or hatched into situations that warrant that they are already on the move, a… Continue

I wrote recently about the idea of a "Re-Enlightenment
" and about moving forward toward a world which was not controlled by mythology, dogma, and religious doctrine. In a rather flippant final paragraph I wrote:…

People like to feel that their lives have meaning.
Let me just examine that statement. In this context, people like to feel that their lives are worthwhile, that their actions are of some consequence, that there is a reason to get up in the morning, to go to work, to earn money, to go through the daily routines that we do to support… Continue

We as a species tend to think of ourselves as pretty special. We have mental abilities that far surpass those of any other creature on earth, and we have social structures that we can maintain without constant infighting or always resorting to violence and territorial squabbles. We have a natural tendency toward togetherness and community where each of… Continue

Well! How to begin.
I guess I'll start with my motivation
When I was a kid, I'd gone to my local Church every Sunday. I didn't know why I went, I wasn't all to sure that there was a god- even at that time, but I did believe in the history
that the Bible claimed to have happened and so I divulged myself into that.
Growing up, I had always been alone and felt a little isolated, so I felt comforted by the warmth I felt from the Church every day I… Continue
