Explain That!

"So, you're an Atheist/Scientist/Rationalist/Skeptic, eh?"

"Yes... And?"

"I saw a ghost - EXPLAIN THAT!"

...

If something similar hasn't happened to you guys yet (assuming you're all 'Atheists/Scientists/Rationalists/Skeptics', which I hope isn't necessarily the…

What ARE the Chances?

What happened to all of the good miracles?

I mean, the interesting stuff, coincidentally, all happened long before video cameras - or the internet - were around and ready to at least semi-reliably record and distribute actual…

Out Of The Randomness

One argument that I tackled in an earlier post was the fine tuning argument. I thought about it for a while, and I thought of one of my interests: Astronomy. I realized that there are thousands of galaxies and millions of stars and planets out there. So are we really "fine tuned"? Why us and not any one of the other millions of planets? Why haven't we found life on other planets? For those of you who do not know much about cosmology or astronomy there is a certain Goldilocks zone that a…

God's Will and Human Freedom

I am sure that most of you, weather you be Atheists of Theists have heard a whole lot about God's Will. This is thrown out like verbal diarrhea every time that someone dies or a natural disaster occurs. I have often questioned why people are so quick to say that a kid that gets caught in the crossfire of a gang shooting received a "gift" and that it was God's Will that she get shot and killed in a park. How is that a gift? What proof is there that she is in a better place? Who are you to…

Hitchens: A Skeptical Review of His Politics

Many times when we've read an author so persuasive that they take on a cult like status. With Hitchens, you might expect that all of his arguments are persuasive and begin to ignore fact checking. It would be a mistake to do so. Hitchens, while one of my favorite people to hear debate religion (Matt Dillahunty might give him a good run for entertainment and relevance.), his politics leaves me confounded and concerned about his ability to shoot straight. It brings up a serious point, that we… Continue

Review of God: The Failed Hypothesis by Victor Stenger (2007)

Victor Stenger makes an empirical investigation of the God Hypothesis and delivers a geek-fest of smack-down to the theory that God can be anything close to what most theists believe. From the outset, Stenger establishes a baseline of characteristics that the God(s) in his experiment will have, populated largely with the often-stated abilities and preferences of the Judeo-Christian God Yahweh.

A challenge is issued in the first chapter to those who say that science has no… Continue

Book Review: God is Not Great by Christopher Hitchens

(crossposted on my site davenichols.net)

Hitchens wastes no time making his point clear with the title on the cover: God is not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything. While he isn't quite thorough enough to completely validate his 'everything' assertion, he nonetheless assaults religious foundations throughout this book and makes a very convincing case that religion has undermined many of the very causes it claims to support.

He… Continue

The Bee's Knees

Hey guys,

This is a re-post from my other blog where I do most of my writing (mostly aimed directly at some of my Christian friends), but I wanted to share it here to get some other thoughts on its subject matter. Here it is.

I need to take a moment of silence in honor of StumbleUpon for guiding me toward a website that encapsulates the problem with… Continue
