Stop the NSCP - time to weigh in

As you know, I believe education is the key to beginning to solve all of the woes we have in society today. Yes all of them. From world hunger to population, from wars to disease, from terrorism to the production of clean and renewable energy. Each of these can be solved if we educate the people who are directly effected by them, and those who go into areas to help. In fact I can't think of one situation that cannot be made better without education, at least in the long term. Education should… Continue

“Census 2011, why mark No Religion?”

From Martin S Pribble

Australia is in a very privileged position this year. We have an opportunity to tell our government who we really are, what we treasure about our lives in Australia and what we would like to see in our future in this country. In a country that seems to be increasingly pandering to the Australian…

Are all teenage atheists going through phases?

As a junior at my high school, I participate in a series of events with freshman and incoming freshman to help them get used to the transition from middle school. When at an event honoring the Honor Society (why yes, I AM a nerd, thank you) I was asked what I wished to pursue as a career upon leaving. When I answered "Biology, with an emphasis on evolution" I really didn't think anything of it until later I was pulled aside. A "concerned parent" asked me if I wanted to study evolution because I… Continue

Thanks Mr. Sommerville

Mr. Sommerville was one of my high school teachers. I took his philosophy class, and even though I got a D, I felt that was one of the most influential classes I'd ever taken, aside from drama & food studies.

He had mentioned that he was an atheist in our first class. I couldn't picture an atheist before him, so when I think of the first one, he comes to mind.

My only real debate with him was when he said "Oh my god" or "good god", using god…

My Idea of Fun: An Impromptu, Three-Hour Discourse with a Creationist

(A quick side note about all of the names in the post: I'm terrible at names, and I can't really remember anyone's just yet. So they're probably wrong, or attributed to the wrong people. I might go back and fix them once I find out the actual names.)

Sorry for the delay in posting this. At first I was just going to take a small break over the weekend, then I caught the bug that was going around while at the local church picnic. (Apparently, that blessing of the food didn't do too… Continue

Misusing the word Truth

Firstly, I would like to thank everyone who has commented on my first post. The level of support is pretty amazing, and I've gotten plenty of great ideas already. Thanks a lot, everyone!

Now, on to the main point.

The first real debate I had with the Apologetics was a few days ago at their weekly meeting.

I got there a few minutes early, and sat near the front of the room, just listening to everyone. They really weren't talking about anything; someone needed an ethernet… Continue

The First of Many Headaches...

I attend a small, local college in Northwest Florida, right along the southern part of the Bible Belt.

The college isn't very big, and just recently upgraded from a simple community college to a full four-year college. Many of us call it 13th grade, and it makes for a very tight-nit feeling with many of the students and professors, which is nice.

For as long as I've attended (over three years now, including dual-enrollment during the latter part of high school), there has always… Continue

Court Prevents Bible Reading in School

AP Story Below

PHILADELPHIA - A kindergartner's mother cannot read Scripture during show and tell, even if the Bible is the boy's favorite book, a U.S. appeals court ruled.

"Parents of public school kindergarten students may reasonably expect their children will not become captive audiences to an adult's reading of religious texts," Chief Judge Anthony J. Scirica wrote in Monday's split 2-1 opinion, which upheld a lower court's ruling.

In October 2004, the… Continue
