Reality Isn't Up for Debate

John Zande wrote a fantastic post about why atheists care about religion. In it, he addressed the idea that a comfortable lie should take precedence over potentially uncomfortable truths.  I've written…

Julia Sweeney on What She's Learned

Interesting article.  And (spoiler alert!) I suspect a lot of parents can empathize with what she says toward the end about Santa Claus.

The type of Mother I want to be.

I've been an atheist for 10+ years now, most of my family still thinks it's a phase. This doesn't bother me, whatever helps them sleep at night. My mom is the only person who believes it, she said "I'm not happy with it, but I would be a bad mom to try and see you for anything you are not." this made me so happy. I was about 19 when she said this, and it came after I spent a weekend babysitting my youngest cousin. That weekend was when I figured out the type of mom I wanted to…

Of Teapots, Santa Claus and Doubt

It was pointed out to me in a comment this morning about Bertand Russell's Teapot, that theists dismiss the ideas of Santa Claus and The Celestial Teapot outright because of the silliness of the ideas and the incredible unlikeliness that they exist, but fail to see their own shortcomings in judgement about their belief in god or Gods along the same premise. I see why this is, after all,… Continue

Let's Put Claus Back Into Christmas

Let’s Put Claus Back Into Christmas:

A modest proposal

Remember Christmas when you were a child?

The Season was a time to come together as family and friends...and even make Peace with your enemies for at least a few days.  Christmas was all about bringing people together.  Religious differences were just like social class or politics or even gender...every town was like Mayberry and had their…

Rational thinking.

I recently stumbled upon a very interesting scene in the movie "Miracle on 34th street".

When you see the movie, you think : "Oh, that'll be nice for the kids.". After all, it IS a family movie.

But as the story evolves, you see that, in the courthouse the girl refers to the inscription on the dollar:

"In God we trust". Using this as evidence, to prove that the beardy, old man in court is actually Santa Claus,

does not really make sense. Of course, it is…

God ≠ Santa

“God is Santa Clause for grown ups.” You’ve probably heard this before, it’s a fairly common quip used by atheists to illustrate their view on both the existence and purpose of a personal deity. It’s also a surefire way to get under the skin of most any theist. Is it fair though? Are we oversimplifying the punishment and reward aspects of the typical religious dogma we encounter? Are we just trying to make their beliefs out to be childish? After giving the subject a bit of thought recently, I… Continue
