PBS Frontline expose "Secrets of the Vatican" rather shocking at times.

The recently broadcast documentary by Frontline on the inner workings of the Vatican in Rome was quite illuminating and, at times, shocking. Accusations of the Vatican Bank laundering large amounts of underworld money, homosexual activity among, not only the priests, but the highest ranked Vatican officials,  mishandling of the pedophilia scandal , and the continuing power struggle between Pope and Cardinals are all brought to light. I was especially shocked by the video evidence that…

Atheist Admires Pope Francis. So what?

I ran across this piece by a on a blog maintained by the order.  I thought the piece was quite good, actually, and reflects my own views in many ways, and the comments the author makes both to Catholics and indirectly about atheists might be of interest to those here.

*****

It’s not uncommon for my various social newsfeeds to look like an avalanche of news about Pope Francis; it’s an occupational hazard of (i) being a Jesuit and (ii) knowing a lot of Catholics.…

"Scared? Fear the Maker" - Outreach Media

There's one thing I can never understand, and it's the perceived dichotomy between the "all-loving God" and the "vengeful God". Apparently God is to be feared, because he is all-powerful and could exact all sorts of damages upon us and our souls if he so chose to. But on the other hand he loves us with a more pure and generous love than anything else can offer. It doesn't sound like a very nice relationship to enter into willingly.

This month, Outreach Media have gone with this… Continue

WikiLeaks reveals Vatican's lack of willingness to cooperate with sex abuse investigations

(ORIGINALLY PUBLISHED IN SU NOMBRE EN VANO)

Seriously, that the Vatican wouldn’t want to cooperate with investigations regarding sex abuse is no news. But the Wikileaks cables are one of the most concrete pieces of evidence (perhaps the most concrete) that we have about the Vatican’s hypocrisy and how unwilling Ratzinger and his minions are to…

Fun Quiz: Who's that Fundamentalist?

How's your trivia skills where quotes from religious leaders are concerned? I just created a new quiz that tries to show how difficult it is to know which fundamentalist said what -- because they all think alike in some very essential ways. Check it out, here.

Your Emin. . .Ah screw it!

Dear Mr. Pope!

You're full of it! Another show of crocodile tears and empty promises that something will be done to give the illusion of

caring! Another call for prayers, as if THAT will get results!

Honestly, I don't expect ANYTHING to be done! You hide behind opulent

walls and wear threads of gold while you send your minions to starving

third world countries to preach the evils of birth control! When are

you going stop acting like putting two hands together… Continue

Two things this week via twitter...

I came across two articles via my massive spiderweb of twitter connections (ha!) ... one fanciful (and extremely humorous) and one factual (I think!) that has a direct Atheist message (or something).

First out of the box:

Set your *snicker at god* to stunning! Check this Aussie's HILARIOUS email easter exchange

(I'm guessing it's fake, but it's very funny fake!)

There's a LOT more funny stuff there... I suggest ye ole… Continue

The Reality of Christian Terrorism

For years now whenever I am in a debate with Christians and the topic reaches over into my anti-theistic view I constantly get answers along the lines of, "The Gospel teaches salvation by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone. There is no meriting salvation or earning righteousness. Everything in a Christian's life is gifted and there is no rational way to feel superior to others with a Christian belief." and "I don't see that really happening in the Christian world, but why should it… Continue

The Unsubstantiated Decree: A Critique on Papal Condemnation of Abortion in the “Evangelium Vitae”

In 1995, Pope John Paul II wrote the “Evangelium Vitae,” a letter directed at the entirety of the Roman Catholic Church. The primary topic of this encyclical is the sanctity, value, and inviolability of human life. Along with discussions of murder and euthanasia, the Pope includes a lengthy section in which he condemns abortion as a “particularly serious and deplorable” crime against life (Hurley 23); he immediately lists abortion alongside infanticide with no justification for how… Continue
