For Solomon Burke

In the midst of our railing against religion, it can be easy to forget the human heart that lies within its crumbling machinery. I have long been a lover of traditional gospel music, particularly the kind that developed among African-American Protestantism. While I get nothing from the propaganda undercutting it, I am easily swept up in the emotion of the performance and those lyrics which speak of humanity's common longing for solace in this world of woe. Naturally, I am even more drawn to… Continue

"Doubt"

I'm a blind man;

I can not see.

The floor is falling from underneath me;

Falling into unbelief.

Darkness floods this soul of mine,

Till no light can I find.

No Voice - Another Skycomet Poem

So many words I wish to say

And yet, the moment I try,

To critique God is not allowed!

You want to be a fool.

And when I try to…

I was never good enough

My sins were so great.

I feared that God would hate me

When I was only eight.

My parents programed me well.

They taught me to believe

That the Bible is not literal,

At least not… Continue

Sonnet to God, Where were you?

Hello God, if that's really your true name.

Hear me! I have a bone to pick with you!

Where were you when I called, Oh God, your name?

Were you there beside me as said is true...

Or were you playing a stupid card game?

Where were you when the headache began that day?

Where were you when annurysm struck her brain?

When my screams bounced off the wall, what'd you say?

Still I called, but my mind was breaking down.

If you're all powerful,… Continue
