Richard Feynman - My Kind of Scientist

I've been meaning to write a 'love letter' to this man for a while, so here it is.

I'll begin with a quote:

“I can live with doubt and uncertainty and not knowing. I think it is much more interesting to live not knowing than to have answers that might be wrong. If we will only allow that, as we progress, we remain unsure, we will leave opportunities for…

Dealing With Death

10117_177179290131_1826811_n

"Nothing that has happened in my life since [I learned of my mother's death], nothing I believe and nothing I know, can provide consolation. This is why I suspect that I am in some way predisposed not to believe in God, because God is the only thing that could have provided solace... If I had felt that there was an afterlife, believe me, I would have killed myself then and there to join her." - Alom Shaha, The Young Atheist's…

Life is Most Certainly a Fragile Thing

Here we go again, my second blog post. Woohoo!!! Anywho, life as i'm sure you all will know, is in fact, fragile. I'm sure we all have lost friends and family, and the point of this blog post is that this has been on my mind lately. On April 18, 2012 one of my fellow classmates died in a car crash on the road right out in front of our school. It hit our school really hard, and the next couple days after it happened the hallways were completely silent. There was an odd beauty in the silence.…

The Beauty of Nature and the Meaning of Life - Without a God

Greetings to the Think Atheist community!

Here is an extract paragraph from one of my older blog posts 'The Beauty of Nature and the Meaning of Life - Without a God':

"To those who see a lack of emotion or poetry in the idea of a godless universe I would ask why an empirical understanding of their existence – along with the inevitable realisation that it is in itself not extremely meaningful as far as the laws of physics are concerned -  is any…

No Fulfillment Without God?

What are some of the things in your life that make you happy? What are the greatest joys in your life? What gives you the greatest sense of achievement, and what are the moments in your life that you remember as the most important ones? Does religion play a part in any of these moments, feelings or personal possessions? Because according to many religious folk, the greatest thing in their life is their faith in God. This troubles me.

To many, their belief in God, afterlife and… Continue

Where Life Actually Begins in the Bible. Hold Your Breath!

Roughly half of Americans believe that life beings at conception. Why do they believe that? Because their pastors like to read passages like Jeremiah 1:5 "Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations" which seems to show that he was a being before he was born. Or Isaiah 45:9 "He made my…

Debate #1 with Creationism and the Origin of Life

So, there is a group on Facebook called Creationism and the Origin of Life. The admin on this group is pretty much a tyrannical dictator who will delete your posts if he disagrees with you, if you don't capitalise the "G" in the word god (no matter what the context), and has a lot of other ridiculous rules. Anyway, before I get booted from his discussions I decided to at least attempt to debate him. If anyone could help me out with how to respond to some of these posts I would appreciate…

A Belated Eulogy For A Timely Death

This morning, we buried a true son of Paskaloochee. His name was (is?) Earnest Hetman, but everyone knew him as Het. Everyone loved him as well, which explains why a particular incident of primary importance to the latter half of his life was curiously unmentioned by his official eulogizers. As expected, each in their turn – Het’s friends, two sons, and sole surviving sister – merely regaled us with the little, endearing moments that supposedly defined him.

There was, I suspect, some… Continue

The Meaning of Life

As people of religion encounter those of us that have no god, the inevitable question comes up, "What is the meaning of life?" The heated discussion recently here on TA and another question about Nihilism on another site made me think that I can only answer that question visually. I made a collage of some of the photos that make me happy that are from my life, mostly in the last five years. In it you'll find photos of me at work, play, travelling, with the two most important beings in my life,… Continue

On Loss and Belief in an Afterlife

I recently lost a relative, a cousin. I barely knew her, but we had been in the process of reconnecting after nearly 25 years. The circumstances of her life and sudden death are what make it especially poignant to me and are what made me decide to write about it.

First, she was young, only 31. She had a sister only one year older than her and they were very close despite the physical distance of living across the country from each other. They texted each other constantly and had… Continue
