An Atheist and Spirituality

I've been thinking lately about spirituality. No, I'm not suggesting I am about to join a cult, take up tantric meditation or go on a vision quest. What I have been wondering is, is there any basis or evidence for a spiritual or metaphysical part of human existence?

Firstly, I think we need to define what it is we mean by "spirituality". If it means we are all inhabited by everlasting souls, that our existence on earth is a stepping-stone to the afterlife, or that our personalities… Continue

A beautiful summation of Atheism

First off, very little of this will be in my own words, but in the words of Sam Harris. This is basically a transcript of the opening speech that Sam gave in a debate about religion. I know that if I tried I could not put it more beautifully, simply or more elegantly than he did. If I was tempted to call anything the poetry of rational arguments, this would be it.

Please don’t view this as an attack on what you believe – it’s not meant to be mean spirited. Picture as you read this,…

A fool hath said in his heart…

from Martin Pribble

1The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good.2The LORD looked down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there were any that did understand, and seek God.

3
They are all gone aside,…

Faith and Reason: One Way or the Highway?

I thought this might be a good place for my last blog entry from http://www.commonground.net. So, here are some of my thoughts on faith and reason.

Another Common Ground blogger, Ian Kluge, directed our attention to the new atheists position that there is an inherent and irreconcilable conflict between faith and reason.

Christopher Hitchens sums up their position this way: “All attempts to reconcile faith…

"Nietzsche and the Death of God" from Martin S Pribble

From Martin S Pribble

"God is dead. God remains dead. And we have killed him. How shall we comfort ourselves, the murderers of all murderers? What was holiest and mightiest of all that the world has yet owned has bled to death under our knives: who will wipe this blood off us? What water is there for us to clean…

'The "New Atheism" is not new at all' - from Martin S Pribble blog

from Martin S Pribble blog

I have too many things floating around my head right now to make a real point with this blog entry, so bear with me while I go on a cathartic rant.

I have recently seen a lot of criticisms about the "New Atheist Movement" saying it's disruptive and threatens to destroy society and all it holds dear. Some even say it will cause the end of the world. Most of the criticism is aimed at the so-called… Continue

"Science is irreconcilable with religion" from Atheist Climber blog

from Atheist Climber blog

There are people who claim that science and religion can exist side-by-side, one asking the "how" questions (science) and the other asking the "why" questions (religion). I'd like to say I disagree with this stance, and for a few simple reasons.…

"The Bible Is Not A Historical Textbook" from Atheist Climber blog

I'm scared for the future of Australia, and I'll tell you why.

Recently I have been reading reports of education in Queensland that sugest that people who believe the logical fallacies of the Bible have been teaching biblical writings as historical fact. I don't need to break the bible down piece by piece to show you why it is… Continue
