I am sure that most of you, weather you be Atheists of Theists have heard a whole lot about God's Will. This is thrown out like verbal diarrhea every time that someone dies or a natural disaster occurs. I have often questioned why people are so quick to say that a kid that gets caught in the crossfire of a gang shooting received a "gift" and that it was God's Will that she get shot and killed in a park. How is that a gift? What proof is there that she is in a better place? Who are you to… Continue

Crosspost from here:
Well, you've heard it said... and I imagine many of you have said it yourself, exasperated with some atheist complaint about prayer in school or a creche scene in front of a courthouse: "It's freedom of religion not freedom from religion."
Well, actually it is both; you cannot… Continue

I've seen so many groups get all upset over different issues ranging from the Occupy Wall Street movement to anti-war protesters to Creationist propaganda. I also see from time to time the hate spewed by the Westboro Baptist Church and I cringe each time. I've seen people accuse and believe political propaganda and spout off repeated twists of the truth to serve their own agenda knowing its a lie. I've seen people con others into scams, political ideology and all around social nonsense. But… Continue

How is freedom OF religion also not freedom FROM religion? It doesn't say "freedom of any available Christian denomination" So that would infer, freedom to choose Buddhism or Hindu, or (as Abraham Lincoln said) "when I do good, I feel good" THAT is my religion."

I wanted to just tell everyone how excited we should all be today for the freedom of Libya for the Libyan people as most of Tripoli has already been liberated from Ghaddafi's thugs and two of Ghaddafi's sons are already reported to be under arrest. This is a great day because it demonstrates to the entire world and to the thugs and dictators that remain that your day is also near. I hope to see the liberation of Syria to follow as well as Iran. Very important to note that after the… Continue

The fact that two FEMALE MP's were able to speak out and one of them was a former army general says a lot about how we have helped improve the lives of people in Afghanistan over the last 10-years. We have enabled women to be… Continue

I thought this story was interesting because of the alliance between parties on opposite ends of the political spectrum.
AP: Dutch consider banning religious animal slaughter

One of Europe's first countries to allow Jews to practice their religion openly may soon pass a law banning centuries-old Jewish and Muslim traditions on the ritual slaughter of animals. In the Netherlands, an unlikely alliance of an animal…

Of all the days of my 13th summer in Paskaloochee, none stands out so clearly as the day Bent Turner completely lost his mind. He had always been a little off; thus the name, Bent. What his true first name was I never bothered to ask. Bent he was to the town, the nomenclature applied with varying degrees of affection depending upon factors such as age, social status, or denominational affiliation. I say denominational rather than religious, for all in my hometown claimed kinship in the same… Continue

Being my first blog post on TA, I felt I should start with my basic principles for how I live my life. While I am not a militant atheist (I tend to consider myself agnostic leaning toward atheist) I don't hide my views when the topic of conversation leads to the spiritual. I have seen how people of religion wonder how someone who doesn't follow a religion can be good and moral, and how we can see a purpose in our life without a higher power guiding us. Here are my two simple rules for living a… Continue

I am re-posting this only because I think that everyone, regardless their beliefs or lack of them, should live by these rules.
TEN COMMANDMENTS FOR A GLOBAL HUMANISM
1- Proclaim the natural dignity and inherent worth of all human beings, in all places and in all circumstances.
2- Respect the life and property of others at all times.
3- Practice tolerance and open-mindedness towards the choices and life styles of others.
4- Share with… Continue

For those that may be interested, next weekend (6-8th) the Freedom From Religion Foundation is putting on a convention all weekend at the Red Lion on Fifth Ave. Go here
for more info.
For those that don't know, they fight for us on legal points on a regular basis and put out a pretty decent paper 10 times a year or so. There are few months that they take off. Their website

So this idea just sort of hit me. We the Atheist community are against the attempted theocracy that the religious lobby's attempt to create day in and day out. I think we need to join other fights other than just the basic ones. Many of us, I have gauged from discussions posted on this site, support things such as Gay rights. It doesn't have to be just Gay rights. Anything that you feel like protesting, if you go to these events we need to get… Continue
