Tough, somewhat embarrassing situation for me; time to share...

BACKGROUND

As I have mentioned in many, many posts I am an "out of the closet" atheist, and have been since my mid teens. I have been married for 27 years, and have five great kids - 2 of whom are adults. I also have a grandson. When I was dating my wife, and we were beginning to get serious, we had the religious discussion. I knew she came from a very strict Catholic upbringing, but through our discussions over the years I also knew that she wasn't a Christian, much…

Religious infection

Everywhere I turn, everywhere I go people are talking about god. Even my family is plagued by this nonsense. I use to live in California, and I've never had a problem wiht people praying before meals for the occasional "Bless you" because...It was occasional! Ever since I moved to Minnesota I hear and see it everywhere. My sister in-law, who I thought for a long time was a very nice woman now quotes verses on Facebook, and snidely states "I didn't come from a monkey". Which at first made me…

Selling Your "Soul" For a Free Ride...

I've recently entered college, and my college of choice was fortunate enough to be 20 miles down the road from my aunt, who has agreed to let me stay with her for free. Upon the conditions that allow me to stay here are doing chores around the house, taking care of her autistic son with her (he's my cousin, it's not like I was going to say no...) and attending church with the family on Sundays.

Does this make me a "bad" atheist? I mean, singing and pretending I believe in the…

Is TV Too Gay?

A discussion that got under my nerves and electrically shocked me into a spastic fit and eye twitches about the hit Fox t.v show "Glee", and, personally, I find that only until recently has there been a decent representation of gay teens on T.V/Movies, if any had been made at all in the past.

In this video, you'll see Bryan Fischer, director of American Family Association, which as you all know upon hearing, has to do with some sort of bigotry and…

My Dad's Funeral

I had no reason to believe that my dad's funeral wouldn't be religious. It was at the church where my parents were married and so my mom chose the very same Calvary Temple to have his service. I was asked to read from the bible, if either I or my half sister would read it. Since she made all sorts of excuses not to read it, I ended up doing it. Am I going against my belief or rather non-belief? Yes. Am I being there for my family, especially my newly-widowed mom? Yes. Would I do it again at…

A Family Christmas Debate: Age of accountability?

So it is Christmas day and I have just arrived at my Grandparents home to celebrate as is the tradition and has been since I remember. One thing has changed since those days of old and that is my deconversion from fundamentalist christian into atheism. This is something that only my brother and his wife are aware of and even then we avoid the subject.

But I digress..

I had just arrived at my grandparents home and open the door to walk into the middle of a…

Keeping your Holidays healthy and free from destructive behavior.

* ~ Originally posted on Examiner.com ~

Ever notice how upset people get around "The Holidays"...? So are many others and studies point to Christmas being the cause of many unnecessary stresses and unhealthy practices. Imaginary reasons for continuing the practice are leading some to reconsider this celebration of the new year as…

Who Made Blood Red?

Yesterday, my dad and I were in the kitchen. I have a journal the I write his ramblings about, about his childhood, his coming to Canada, all sorts of memories since he has no childhood photos of any kind or souvenirs from his youth. So, I was writing away when he asks, "Who made man's blood red?" He's basically asking why god chose red for man's blood. I told him (and I was told this a long time ago, so correct me) that when your blood is exposed to oxygen, it turns red and that it's actually… Continue

No Voice - Another Skycomet Poem

So many words I wish to say

And yet, the moment I try,

You scream in pain and baffle me

With the rage in your eye.

I guess I know the rule now,

But you could have said the truth!

Instead you lied and said that

You were open to discussion too!

But now I know the hard way

That "unspoken rule."

To critique God is not allowed!

You want to be a fool.

And when I try to…

The Family in Uganda

The Family has wielded it's influence outside of the US. Ugandan Legislator David Bahati has proposed a bill that would imprison a person for a gay act. Upon a second offense, they would face life in prison. There are even jail terms for speaking positively about homosexuality. Story Link

Jeff Sharlet has been… Continue
