Pat Robertson gave me a glimmer of hope that he wasn't bat-shit crazy.... but only for moment

I was going through my daily ritual of catching up with the goings-on in the world, checking out stories on various sites, when I saw an article that I just had to read: Pat Robertson Dispels Creationist Idea That Earth is 6,000 Years Old, on Huffington Post.

I immediately began reading the article, convinced that this was some tease and he didn't…

Shameless Plug #1

Hi everybody. Dave Kilby here with a shameless plug:

I'm currently working on a new series of posts entitled "The Religious Wrong" on my "Grumbles From an Old Grouch" blog (grumblesfromanoldgrouch.com).

Drop by and take a gander at the work-in-progress and feel free to comment, suggest or tell me to "go to Hell" (even if it doesn't exist).

While you're there, check out my "The Theory of Evil-ution vs the Mythology of Creationism" posts. I think you might enjoy them.

In U.S., 46% Hold Creationist View of Human Origins

From: http://www.gallup.com/poll/155003/Hold-Creationist-View-Human-Origins.aspx?version=print

"Despite the many changes that have taken place in American society and culture over the past 30 years, including new discoveries in biological and social science, there has been virtually no sustained change in Americans' views of the origin of the human species since 1982. The 46% of…

The folks at the Creation Museum are at it again - ARK ENCOUNTERS

I was looking at some links to Answers in Genesis (AiG) posted in another discussion, and I began poking around this Young Earth Creationist (YEC) resource site. At the top it has links to other related sites, and one of them caught my eye - ARK Encounter ("Help Build the Ark!"). Being the "Click-Curious" type, I clicked on the link and was taken to a site that is currently a…

Okay then...

I had another debate... this time with a new world creationist I think they're called. He thinks the Earth is 6000 years old. Six thousand years old... great. He was firm on that too, claiming that there is hard scientific evidence for it and he saw that evidence on some DVD's that he has where christian scientists explain why this is true. Right, and I'm a talking snake that seduced Adam's rib.

I told him about Carbon-14 tests and all of the studies and finding archeologist,…

Ark Encounter, Kentucky Creationist Theme Park, Gets Generous Tax Breaks In Budget Proposal

Kentucky Gov. Steve Beshear (D) has proposed a 2012-2013 budget that includes heavy cuts to some key departments while giving a $43 million tax break to a massive creationist theme park.

In his plan, Beshear calls for a 6.4 percent cut to Kentucky's higher education department, a…

Texas can’t catch a break.

(Cross-posted from my actual blog, hosted by the good folks here at Think Atheist!)

When it comes to its education standards, Texas has had a lot of bad luck these last few years.

Whether they were contending with a willfully ignorant dentist whom Texas Governor Rick Perry somehow thought was qualified to chair the State Board of Education (SBoE) and who…

Debate #1 with Creationism and the Origin of Life

So, there is a group on Facebook called Creationism and the Origin of Life. The admin on this group is pretty much a tyrannical dictator who will delete your posts if he disagrees with you, if you don't capitalise the "G" in the word god (no matter what the context), and has a lot of other ridiculous rules. Anyway, before I get booted from his discussions I decided to at least attempt to debate him. If anyone could help me out with how to respond to some of these posts I would appreciate…

Greg House M.D atheist & My creationist co-worker strategy

So I am hoping someone can clue me in on last night's episode of House. He was reading that book of sermons by his biological father, but please tell me, or atleast reassure me he is not losing his atheist touch. It would be a shame to have those right wing nuts at Fox telling the writers to make him more spiritual or it gets cancelled. Fox has been known to cancel some really good shows (anyone remember Firefly and Arrested Development?). Ok, so that may be a huge leap in logic, and I… Continue

Rebirth

Well! How to begin.

I guess I'll start with my motivation.

When I was a kid, I'd gone to my local Church every Sunday. I didn't know why I went, I wasn't all to sure that there was a god- even at that time, but I did believe in the history that the Bible claimed to have happened and so I divulged myself into that.

Growing up, I had always been alone and felt a little isolated, so I felt comforted by the warmth I felt from the Church every day I… Continue

Mental abuse - Children are a special case - How can we defend them?

While talking with my little brother (Sophomore in high school) this evening I asked to see his Biology book. I grew up home schooled with the notorious A.C.E. (Accelerated Christian Education) curriculum so I should have been ready for what I saw.

- "Biology for Christian Schools" (Third Edition) by Thomas E. Porch and Brad R. Batdorf - 2005 BJU Press

Of all the disturbing things in this school book I've decided only to quote the opening to Chapter 8, The History of… Continue

Axe That Clove Creationism Found at Museum After 150 Years

Not sure if anyone has notice this so I thought I would pass it along. It is definitely of some interest to everyone on the site.

A lump of flint that challenged creationist history and was dubbed by an eminent archaeologist "the stone that shattered the time barrier" has been tracked down after 150 years in the vast stores of the Natural History Museum in London.

On 26 May 1859, six months before Charles Darwin shattered the… Continue
