The Constitution is an atheistic document.

This recent quote by former House Majority Leader Tom Delay shocked me.  “I think we got off the track when we allowed our government to become a secular government,” DeLay told host Matthew Hagee, the executive pastor of the Texas Cornerstone Church. “[W]e stopped realizing that God created this nation, that he wrote the Constitution,…

Southern Fried Tyranny With Grits and Hypocrisy

So North Carolina decided that somehow it was a good idea to vote on a civil rights issue seeing how it all worked out so well the first time. This time it wasn’t some racist ideas but it was close enough. It was about gay people having the gall to demand fair treatment under law and be afforded a legal status that is for some reason given only to heterosexual couples. They want to get married.

I’m sorry but there’s this thing called Article 6 of the United States Constitution and…

Christian Doctrine vs the Founding of the US

We often hear from people of all degrees of belief that the "US was founded on Judeo-Christian beliefs". You'll hear Sarah Palin and Michelle Bachman mention the writings of the founders. I've helped shape a law and you can find my writings. I would hardly suggest that that Construction Crane Bill is Atheist, Liberal, or Omnivorous. My opinions have no bearing on what the law passed was. We have the law, let's judge based on that rather than mining obscure quotes of little to no…

What Has and Has NOT Changed? (The New and Not-So-New Normal of Marriage Equality)

Near the end of the first act of Kander and Ebb’s musical “Cabaret”, the character Herr Schultz observes, “How the world can change, it can change like that, due to one little word:  ‘Married.’”  Just a little over two weeks ago, on June 24, 2011, it seemed as if the world had changed “like that.”  The State of New York extended the legal right to marry to same-sex couples—something it had declined to…

Right Wing Arrogance & Ignorance

“It won’t be long until this is a communist country,” it was said today during a business meeting. The conversation was in regards to a Chinese supplier and their ability to expand space and operations. One co-worker jokingly stated that the government could just throw out the neighbors and raze the building, allowing the supplier to expand. The reason for this, my co-worker explained with a chuckle, is because they are communists. I retorted that it happens all the time here in the United… Continue

Congress Goes to Recess - Secular Successes and Failures So Far This Year

Congress at Recess As nonbelievers I think 'separation of church and state' issues tend to show up on our radar much more easily than it does for believers. Too few believers realize that separation of church and state is what allows them to practice their flavor of Christianity. So many who push for more Christian influence in government don't seem to realize that they might end up disagreeing with the flavor that comes to power. If only more believers realized this, I think we would have so many more… Continue

Kingsville: King of Ignorance

Kingsville Texas is the county seat of Kleberg County; in January of 1997 county commissioners unanimously designated "heaven-o" as the county's official greeting.

Okay, I know that's not really breaking news; but I've been on a bit of a separation of church and state kick, so when I stumbled on this I thought I'd share.

So what is wrong with using "hello?" Well it turns out that Leonso Canales Jr. thinks "hello" is a negative greeting due to its… Continue
