Believing in God is NOT Bullshit

Mankind believes in God because most of mankind cannot help themselves to not believe. The majority of Mankind appears to need simple answers when something is unexplainable (how we got here), or horribly indifferent.

God or religion is like comfort food for even those who are intelligent and inventive. Just look at 9-11 and the collapse of the Twin Towers.

For the past 10 years I have listened to "God Bless America" to honor the victims. Every time I hear "God Bless America"…

The Power of Belief: How beliefs can warp the facts

It’s time for me to renew my license plates. Luckily, I received a card in the mail with a PIN number, License Plate Number, and some other information I would need to renew them online. Given the many wasted hours spent waiting in line at the DMV over the years, I was grateful for this new alternative.

So, I went to log into the site with the information provided. I was asked for my PIN and plate number (changed). The PIN Number was completely new to me, but I was pretty confident I… Continue

Rock Beyond Belief

Billy Graham and many, many other Christian people get together to host "Rock The Fort." A convention full of Jesus-lovers that takes place on America's military bases. Now, you would think that the separation of church and state would apply here but good 'ol America ignored that part and funded the event.

From Rock Beyond Belief…

Donating through Foundation Beyond Belief

Have you ever checked out the organization Foundation Beyond Belief? If not, I recommend it. In their own words: "Our purpose is to focus, encourage, and demonstrate the generosity and compassion of atheists and humanists in the interest of a better world. Of these, our primary purpose is to encourage each other to embody the highest principles of humanism, including mutual care and responsibility."

Currently they have a special link for donating specifically to provide aid related… Continue

So much for the “inerrant” word of god.

And here you have it, yet another version of the inerrant word of god is on the works, because we (well, not we, they - but you know what I mean) need to make the bible make sense. Yes, that's exactly what I meant to say.

So, we are in for a new set of semantics and mythological animals brought to life by the editors that will probably change "unicorns" for "rhinos" - who knows! Maybe even Noah's Ark story will make sense this time, no?  Okay, sarcasm is not very easy to… Continue

Ann Druyan, talking about her husband, Carl Sagan

“When my husband died, because he was so famous & known for not being a believer, many people would come up to me — it still sometimes happens — & ask me if Carl changed at the end & converted to a belief in an afterlife. They also frequently ask me if I think I will see…

Woman Kills Baby by Jumping from Balcony to Avoid the Devil

Okay, take a good read, because this is un-freaking-believable!

A BABY died when 12 members of a family leapt from a third-floor balcony fleeing what they believed was the DEVIL.

The tragedy happened after a wife woke to see her naked husband moving around…

Sadly, this is overwhelmingly true.

I Understand Belief in God

When I've noted that I'm an Atheist, or Non-Believer to a theist, the reaction is generally incredulous. "How can you not believe in God?" is a common response. I imagine this is typical for most. Beyond the obvious training reasons for the reaction, there is a deeper hope in the existence of God that I sometimes understand and even feel myself. I sometimes wonder if this feeling is simply more consistent in believers.

Sometimes life is just hard. It might be that your pet…

And just like that, I was dead.

No, seriously! I was dead, just for a few minutes, but dead nonetheless. Long story short, on Sept. 25th an allergic reaction to a supposedly innocuous pill, caused my throat to close, shutting off my breathing and within minutes I was dead, literally.

But this rant is not about my ordeal from that night, which I can’t deny, was scary and surreal, and ultimately ended up with me waking up in the hospital, incredibly tired, with a sore throat and an extremely bruised chest, after 7… Continue

Don't Believe, Think Instead

One of the things that make me cringe is when I read something from a scientist, academician, teacher, or reporter and they use a form of belief instead of a form of think.

A reporter might include in a sentence: "Scientists believe that..." or "It is the belief of historians..."

Someone giving a lecture might say: "It is believed by people in the field..." or "We currently believe that..."

A seemingly innocuous word… Continue

On Loss and Belief in an Afterlife

I recently lost a relative, a cousin. I barely knew her, but we had been in the process of reconnecting after nearly 25 years. The circumstances of her life and sudden death are what make it especially poignant to me and are what made me decide to write about it.

First, she was young, only 31. She had a sister only one year older than her and they were very close despite the physical distance of living across the country from each other. They texted each other constantly and had… Continue

Is faith justified pragmatically?

Do feelings have any relevance when it comes to belief? Many theists argue that they believe what they believe because they "feel" better doing so.

A Christian says "I believe in Jesus because this belief helps me through life and comforts me and gives me strength."

Even though this is technically not a scientific argument for belief in Jesus, does this argument have any pragmatic grounds or philosophical grounds? It is true that belief in something which does not exist… Continue
