My first post and I've been invited to argue the bible by a Jehovah's Witness... wow.
Hi guys,
Let me say straight away, this is not the blog post I wanted to make as my first. However, I find myself in an unusual position.
Today, I went to the pub. While there I got talking to a lovely couple with two children about their gorgeous puppy bitch (that fell asleep in my arms). The conversation moved on to my family and to my father's (and my) atheism, my mother career as a nurse and my vast array of siblings. I also mentioned that one of my father's…

Were you raised by Theists? How I beat the odds....
Gday from Australia , awesome to find such a site which I stumbled upon on twitter.
I am fortunate to come from a country where our Prime minister is a woman and an Atheist and a community of mateship in the land downunder.
Where although ever present Religion vs Atheism is neither here nor there, It's rare that the topic comes up to be honest.
I work with a Hindu, a couple of Christians about 3 Atheists a Witch a Self professed Psychic and some undisclosed lol, and…

AN ATHEIST IN THE WOODS
l
An atheist was walking through the woods.
'What majestic trees!'
'What powerful rivers!'
'What beautiful animals!'
He said to himself.
As he was walking alongside the river, he heard
a rustling in the bushes behind him.
He turned to look. He saw a…

Why I don't like being called an "Atheist"
This is from Ricky Gervais' interview with Richard Dawkins. It PERFECTLY describes how I feel:
"I hate being labeled an Atheist because it's not how I live my life. I don't live my life going around going "I'm an Atheist, I'm an Atheist..." There's billions of other aspects to my life, why I do things. It's just when God's put into the equation, I don't take that on board. I don't do anything because a god's watching me, or because I feel God owns anything, or God's driving me. It's a…

Zealous atheists resemble religious fanatics

Some years ago I attended a meeting in the home of a prominent Toronto businessman. Probably because he recognized me as he let me in, he felt compelled to warn me that he was a devout atheist.
Atheism nowadays…

My response to a Muslim who sent me 27 tweets
Thank you for sending me 27 tweets trying to save my soul, which i don't have from hell which does not exist upon being judged by a god that isn't there. Wanting me to go to a heaven, which does not exist is a nice though. It still bewilders me what i would do with 72 virgins, and would they stay virgins afterwards? How long would it be before all 73 of us would be bored by each other? Eternity can be a very long time you know.…

Billy Graham’s daughter: ‘I would not vote for an atheist’
By David Edwards
Sunday, April 8, 2012 14:14 EDT
The daughter of televangelist Rev. Billy Graham says that it’s important to discriminate against candidates who are atheists because politicians “should have a fear for almighty God.”
In an interview with Ann Graham Lotz on Sunday, NBC host David Gregory noted that her father had advocated using…

No Evolution For You
I recently found out my daughter's High School "science teacher" is unwilling to teach 'conventional evolution' based on her reservations about teaching a theory she doesn't believe in. I guess this is one of those things you say you saw coming but never thought would happen to you (your family). I am wondering about how best to pursue this issue. My first inclination is a scorched earth take no prisoners assault on the principals office…

Anyone else referred to as a "Devil Worshipper", "Satanist", etc. - long ago or now?
I replied to a thread a bit ago and told a story about my experience in the late 1970s/early 1980s in dealing with aggressive xians from penecostal megachurches - both adults and teens. Here's the story I told...

How I understand Morality..
You'll have to bear with me on this, I'm not very good at writing.. And even worse with putting my thoughts and ideas into writing, but I'll give it a go.
In a recent argument/discussion with a Christian about morality, I suddenly realized I hadn't given it much thought! I've always just.. Been moral, I've never had to think about why, or how I should be moral.. But then I thought about it more, and it seems I DO think about why and how.. I seem to base my morality on the idea…

Crosses - A Poem
Cross yourself and speak unto Jesus
And hope for the species that the people deceased
Are released from the pain and the suffering
Your faith is decreasing, the pages are creasing
In the only book you've been reading.
The idea is appealing, but somehow revealing
Of the fear that you're breeding.
And you're left needing...
You're only human.
A part of this species that does as it pleases.
If you do what they tell you then you will be…

Atheism is the "new cool"?
On September 19 2011, the Telegraph website published an article titled "Atheism is cool, says Archbishop Rowan Williams". In the article the Archbishop claims the apparent rise in atheism due to it's "cool" factor, and that refutations of authors such as Richard Dawkins don't get the attention they "deserve" because atheism is the latest fad, not…

Listen to Your Elders
Growing up the phrase preached regardless of religion is, "Listen to your elders." While it make sense in a control of the masses perspective while kids are going to school, I don't find in retrospect that it was the best advice. Currently, it's severely inadequate as a method of seeking truth or as a method of learning. When I think back to my Grandmother telling me to put on a hat because I'll catch a cold, I can't help by think, "Derp!" My mother told me to buy a house, you'll never lose…

The Geek's Journey
NOTE: This was supposed to be in DRAFT mode, as I had not finished it. If you happened to have read it beforehand, I apologize for the abrupt ending. I'm working on it now :)
I know that we here at T|A encourage others to share their (non)spiritual journey - the story of how they got from where they were to where they are now. I have enjoyed reading other people's journeys - and I find it fascinating and comforting that most of these journeys are more alike than they…
