Religious Discounts at Denny's and Elsewhere

According to James Randi Educational Foundation blogger Jeff Wang, a Euless, Texas Denny's offered a 10% discount and a 10% donation to the church of any customer who attended that church. When Wang asked how a non-believer might take advantage of the offer, the Denny's crew was stumped. (… Continue

Killing Religion: Should We and How

When we talk about relinquishing the world of religion, we should all realize that we are proclaiming war on a set of ancient ideas or thoughts, rather than groups of people. Richard Dawkins gave these sets of inheritable thoughts a name, Memes, which he defines as "a unit of cultural transmission, or a unit of imitation." These ideas, or memes, jump from host to host at such a rapid rate that it is nearly impossible to prevent or control, or even predict. The result of becoming infected by… Continue

Atheism is simple... Or not. O.o Random boring day drawl... (You don't have to read this! lol!)

Okay... so today, I just finished my second final exam! (1 class left to go... yeah baby!!! Whoo hoo!)

Anyhow... so I'm procrastinating in the library to avoid writing my final paper for lit class and started browsing the "Religion" section of the encyclopedia shelves. I was astounded at what I found. There was a book on the bottom shelf entitled "The New Encyclopedia of Unbelief." Well, I had always thought atheism was kind of simple... I mean... either you believe in God or you don't.… Continue

Local Raleigh, NC Non-Religious Group Featured in N&O

It is good to see a well-balanced article in the News & Observer about a local Raleigh parenting group which meets in a non-religious context.

On Sunday mornings, when many of their contemporaries are taking their seats in church pews, a group of young parents mingle in the living room of a suburban home while their children run around playing games. This congregation of Triangle…

Book Review: God is Not Great by Christopher Hitchens

(crossposted on my site davenichols.net)

Hitchens wastes no time making his point clear with the title on the cover: God is not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything. While he isn't quite thorough enough to completely validate his 'everything' assertion, he nonetheless assaults religious foundations throughout this book and makes a very convincing case that religion has undermined many of the very causes it claims to support.

He… Continue

An Atheist & A Buddhist Walk In To A Bar

Can you be an atheist and a buddhist at the same time? Sure. The words "atheist" and "buddhist" are only labels. Apply the labels however you see fit.

I'm sure I've upset a couple of people with my opening statement. Good. That means I have made you think. Let's dig a little further. Forgive me if this rambles as I am freeflowing this between mini-fires that flare up at work. Not real fires, but mini-IT problems.

What is an atheist? An atheist is "a person who denies or disbelieves… Continue

A call to action!!!

Currently in the United States "Non Religious" people make up about 20% of the population.

This includes Atheists, Agnostics, Secular non affiliated, No preference, etc. Jews consist of less than 2% of the population of the United States. Mormons less than 2%, Muslims less than 1%. These are the religious groups that the non-religious out number, yet why is it that we are lucky to get 1 or 2 congressmen to represent us? The truth is that essentially every congressman or woman in congress… Continue

The Elephant in the Room: Sleeping with a Theist

I am not trying to put down a set of rules for dating a theist, or telling you this will work for you, what I am doing is putting down my opinions and beliefs after a long time of thinking about the question, “Can I as an atheist have a long-term relationship with a theist?” This is something that I have pondered for quite some time and currently am living it.

So I figure we’ll start with the beginning of a relationship and work from there. First you meet the person and you find out they… Continue

The Bee's Knees

Hey guys,

This is a re-post from my other blog where I do most of my writing (mostly aimed directly at some of my Christian friends), but I wanted to share it here to get some other thoughts on its subject matter. Here it is.

I need to take a moment of silence in honor of StumbleUpon for guiding me toward a website that encapsulates the problem with… Continue

Somedays I feel like witnessing...

Often times I find myself walking around the mall or in and out of stores and there are folks who feel like witnessing to me (witnessing is street mission work for those unfamiliar with the Christian term). Most times I'm in a hurry or they catch me when I am to tired to argue responsibly, so I kindly say, "I'm not interested," or "I'm an atheist," without stopping to give them time to argue. Then there are days where I feel like doing some of my own witnessing myself.

I would like… Continue

Genesis 3: God screws up the world, blames man

The Bible’s Answer

The Bible, like many myths, begins with answering how the world came to be and why it’s so screwed up.

The Bible tells us that God created everything in six days. He created Adam out of dust, and Eve out of Adam’s rib. (Woman, being the property of man, doesn’t get the dignity of her own mud spawning.) They were placed in the Garden of Eden and told they could eat of any fruit except one. If they ate that… Continue
