Congress Passes Mandatory Public Service Act; Participants Forbidden From Attending Church While Serving

On 09 March the House passed H.R. 1388; and on 26 March the Senate passed it as well. H.R. 1388, Officially title the Generations Invigorating Volunteerism and Education Act, or GIVE Act, is being referred to by many as the Mandatory Public Service Act.

Students graduating high school will be required to register; but can delay their registration by attending college. Mandatory or volunteer participation will be based on the household income of the parents of the… Continue

Charles Haynes: In Florida, debunking the school prayer myth

An Opinion

By CHARLES HAYNES

March 28, 2009

Hundreds of Christians rallied outside a high school in Santa Rosa County, Fla., earlier this month to protest a court order ending the involvement of local school officials in prayers, proselytizing and a school-sponsored baccalaureate service.

The crowd's outrage was directed both at the American Civil Liberties… Continue

"my rapist was protected in the name of honor."

Fatima contacted the BBC World Service citizen journalism project, Your Story, because she wanted to share her experiences of sexual abuse growing up within a strict Muslim family in Abu Dhabi.

She suffered many years of abuse before she finally told her mother what had been going on.

Fatima is now 26. She lives in the United States of America where she has just been given asylum and citizenship after establishing that she would be in danger if she returned to her home… Continue

Jesus, Not the Reason for the Season

I know that it is not Christmas but I was not a member on this web page until a couple days ago and I really want to share this information with you. I wrote this informal paper in college and the professor loved it.

Grammar may not be completely correct but I was young, give me a break grammar Nazi's. (lol)

Enjoy...

To most people, Christmas is the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ, born from a Virgin Mary, the savior and ruler of our lives. But to… Continue

Dirty Little Secret

(I had made this blog private because... well... I get a little weirded out by a lot of emotional poop, but Johnny encouraged me to make this public... so here it is anyway. Thanks, Johnny.)

First of all... I hate Vista... with my soul, or whatever it is that causes consciousness... I hate it!!! >:[

Secondly.

I can't do it. I guess this is where my doulble-life begins; this is where I learn what it's like to hide the very essence of who I am... because I just… Continue

Vatican insiders declare the Pope a 'disaster'

Pope Benedict's repeated gaffes and the Vatican's inability to manage his message in the internet era are threatening to undermine his papacy, Vatican insiders have said.

The Holy See is struggling to contain international anger over the Pope's claim on his first official visit to Africa that Aids "cannot be overcome through the distribution of condoms, which even aggravates the problems".

The Pope's remarks about condoms, and a recent… Continue

Religion's Ultimate Sin - Childhood Indoctrination

I recently got into a fairly heated debate with one of my children's aunts regarding religion. She was apparently appalled by the fact that I've been doing my best to shield them (ages 4 and 2) from religion and that I took issue with her teaching them about the Bible while watching them one day. When I learned about it I told her, pretty bluntly, that I did not want her shilling her religious beliefs off on my children and if she wished to babysit them in the future to please respect those… Continue

Would an atheist or an agnostic attend a Christian worship service if invited?

Hi guys. If you check out my profile you will see that I am a Jesus follower doing some research for my doctorate work on religious thinking in the US. This is my first time on an atheist site. If you can imagine being on a Christian site (I have a networking site called the Missional OUtreach Network), then perhaps you understand that I'm a bit nervous! :) I really am a nice guy!

So, if you are kind enough to answer and help me… Continue

Autodidact

Anyone ever heard of this before? I came across it in an episode of Penn & Teller, Bullshit. Its means simply to educate yourself and there are a lot of resources out there to help with it. Pretty interesting.

The God of Abraham, Isaac and... Islam?

At one point in my life, I didn't give much thought to different details in the Bible... everyone else seemed to overlook them, so they weren't brought to my attention. I was in the middle of a Bible study one day and was reading Genesis. I absently scanned the story of Abraham and God's promise to give him a son from which many nations would be born. Well, as we all know, Abraham had some "faith" issues and took matters into his own hands; consequently, he slept with his wife's maidservant,… Continue

Christian Conservatism Offended by Penis

Conservative Christians are offended by lots of things: liberals, atheists, Harry Potter, Muslims, Jews, but they seem to be offended most by the human body, the penis in particular.

"Forget trying to maneuver your way through all the mixed reactions to Watchmen crowding the interweb today. There’s only one question you need to answer, apparently, in order to make up your mind whether or not to see the…

...and it begins.

So, I wrote a blog... ya know, The Fallacy of Faith. I posted it to my myspace. Most of my buddies on that site are family and friends... and they're probably 90% Christian. I thought it was a daring move. I mean, I forget who my friends are. It completely went over my head that my little brother's fiance is on there. Ugh.

They're both "on fire" for God right now; all caught up in this Reformist Church or some-such-shit. Ever heard of Calvinsim? It's a branch of that. Of ALL… Continue

The Great Easter Conundrum

Twice a year since I have stopped being christian, I face a dilemma. Being the daughter of two christian/ex-catholic parents, the you can probably guess what two days those are: Easter and Christmas. Since I am still at the age where I spend my holidays with my family, and my parents feel it is necessary to go to church on these days, I usually get dragged along. Every holiday I am torn: do I go or not? And with Easter just around the bend, this question is once again on my mind. Oh yeah, keep… Continue

Why You Should Think About Encouraging Others to Be Brilliant

It is a beautiful thing to create, to produce, to go out there in the world and make a contribution.

But it is just as important, if not more so, that we help others to do the same — that we teach others to create and produce, that we encourage them, that we support them and help them to succeed.

Why? Why not just worry about our own creations and productions? What’s so important about helping others to succeed?

If… Continue

Make War, Not Love: Violence, Sexuality, and Christianity.

"Could you read the back of this box and tell me if there's any sexual content in this movie?"

The woman across the counter from me holds out the DVD expectantly, and I take it. It's Saw II, part of the now 5-movie franchise which makes a point of being unnecessarily gory. I locate the rating so lovingly bestowed upon the film by the MPAA.

"It's rated R, for gore, violence, and language mostly."

"But no sex,… Continue

A call to action!!!

Currently in the United States "Non Religious" people make up about 20% of the population.

This includes Atheists, Agnostics, Secular non affiliated, No preference, etc. Jews consist of less than 2% of the population of the United States. Mormons less than 2%, Muslims less than 1%. These are the religious groups that the non-religious out number, yet why is it that we are lucky to get 1 or 2 congressmen to represent us? The truth is that essentially every congressman or woman in congress… Continue

The God Paradox

One of the first things I notice when the question of God's existence comes up is how very little is discussed as to what God actually IS. It seems to me that if we are to make progress in this debate, we have to take time to actually reconcile our perceptions of what God actually is in order to debate his existence in the first place. In this blog I will present what I believe the concept of God actually IS and why its important to "simplify" our perceptions of God in order to fully appreciate… Continue
