For anyone who hasn't read my blog posts, I am still a "closet atheist": I don't publicly identify as an atheist, and in fact, part of my income comes from church music. I am Director of Music at a small Methodist church in Nashville, TN. That's right...the buckle of the Bible belt! I honestly can't see myself admitting my atheism to anyone in the near future, as my family's harmony and financial security rely partly on my keeping my church job.
Being honest with myself, however, I…Continue
There is a lot that I don't agree with Sam Harris on. I have always loved his 'atheism is not a philosophy' quote though. He wrote it in Letter to a Christian Nation. I have met quite a few atheists and I certainly don't agree with them on everything. Hell, Irish and I don't even share the same exact…

I am Greg, husband of the recently deceased White Unicorn, Suzanne Olson-Hyde. We are/were both confirmed atheists of long standing - roughly 50 years each - we both gave up religion in our early teens.
But now that Suzanne has 'ceased to be', I am having an internal struggle between my logical self - still DEFINITELY an atheist, and my 'fantasy', wishful thinking self that would love to believe that Suzanne still exists somewhere and that she is being looked after.
Saudi Arabia has officially identified atheists as terrorists in sweeping new laws that threaten up to 20 years in prison for almost any criticism of the government or Islam.
The regulations place secular citizens who commit thought crimes in the same category as violent terrorist groups such as Al-Qaeda's Yemen branch and Saudi Hezbollah.
Under the new decree by King Abdullah, Saudi Arabia will jail for up to 20 years anyone who fights in…Continue
Wesboro Baptist Church founder Fred Phelps dies…
I'm married to a conspiracy theorist.
I used to think like him.
I don't and can't anymore.
I can't help but be painfully aware of how his thinking has bled into our daily lives.
I consider divorce a last resort.
As uncomfortable as it is to be on the receiving end of his lack of trust and subtle paranoia, I imagine it must be much more difficult to live in his head, unsure of the people you live with and love most.
I am compelled to help, I love him, and I'd do…
This is a post about finding meaning. Also crossposted at thephyseter.wordpress.com.
Why do I call myself The Physeter online? My internet moniker is the name of a beautiful and majestic creature:
The sperm whale (Physeter macrocephalus), or cachalot, is the largest of the…

So I have this friend who keeps talking about how awesome her church is every time I see her...which is weird. I get it, you love your church. I'm sad that you're wrapped up in the lies of a religion, but relieved that you're not part of a particularly evil sect...and if you're happy, I'm happy for you. Can we not talk about this for a sixth time? I think she has this fantasy where I'm supossed to say, "Oh yea, they don't hate gays at your Church? The music is modern!? Your husband doesn't…Continue
As a former service member I wish to extend my thanks to all military members. Both current and retired.
Whether you are for a particular conflict or against it the troops are not the one to take your anger out on.

A bus driver for the Burnsville school district was fired last week for leading kids in Christian prayers on his bus, even after he was warned to stop — a move he considers a violation of his freedom of speech.
George Nathaniel, 49, of Richfield, who is also a pastor for a…Continue
How did it happen?
I live alone on 10 acres and I have lots of time to think and weigh out how the world got so crazy. I watch news and when I see people who are in the highest positions of power talking about "God" and how he influences their decisions my stomach churns and I go into a cold sweat. I don't know about you but to me its scary, real scary, Its to the point where I don't want to even go out of the property unless its a absolute necessity. Why are people who seem to have…Continue
In the grand scheme of Christianity, The Ten Commandments are pointless.
If a serial killer can be allowed into Heaven simply because he repented right before his life came to an end, then Thou Shalt Not Kill doesn't mean sh*t as a commandment.
If every bad thing that we have ever done is wiped off of our records simply because we ask God for forgiveness, then commanding people not to kill or lie or steal is useless.
"Don't kill people...but if you do, just say you are…Continue
Thank you for existing, I have been a member for less than a day and I'm already proud and excited to be associated with such a great collaboration of (mostly) intelligent minds. Whoever runs and/or started this site, I would like to shake your hand and thank you in person, and if the opportunity presents itself, I will do so with gusto. Indeed, my point is not yet clear, I dislike the bullshit of social networking in most cases, blah blah, bitch bitch, but here people clearly express there…Continue
From the webcomic Rock Paper Cynic. Full of intelligent, funny, and just plain weird comics, jokes and songs.

I posted this yesterday on my Facebook page**; however I decided to post it here as well, in its entirety. I suspect that there are fellow atheists who find this to be an especially frustrating time because of the continuing fight over sanctioned prayer at high school graduations. At a minimum you may find yourself irritated and disgusted with this whole, ongoing, mess - such as the story of the Valedictorian in Pickens County, SC.
