Irony in christmas eve service & elephant poop

I attended a christmas eve service with my wife, daughter, son-in-law, and grand-daughter at their methodist church. This service was "child friendly" and children and audience all participated (made animal noises, etc). I found one part particularly interesting. At the beginning, the pastor was discussing the nativity scene and explained that no really knows what animals were there. She then plucked an elephant from the scene and explained that she particularly liked the elephant. "As…

The Jewish View of Creationism

"When the facts change, I change my mind. What do you do, sir?" --John Maynard Keynes

Few adjectives produce more of an emotional charge than "fundamentalist." It conjures up images of unhinged radical mobs in neuvo-Klan attire (indiscriminately) firing their AK-47's in the air,

or of barefoot ignoramuses clutching their Bibles and getting excited

to head off to the town lynchin'. Regrettably, there are far too many

folks -- both inside and outside the…

The Biblical God Has the Morals of a Serial Killer.

I often find myself explaining to believers why I'm incredibly glad that their God is not real. They seem surprised that I would not want their 'loving' God to be part of my life. I find that the story of Job is one of the best examples of the Biblical god's moral failing. The follow is my response the theists that believe they follow a benevolent…

Basically a church a mile.

Went back home (to the Bible Belt) with my wife and new-born for Christmas to visit my parents and my in-laws. They live 52 miles apart from each other. Today while traveling between the two, I decided to count all the churches that I saw while driving the 52 miles. I counted 48 churches. Basically a church a mile. The radio stations were filled with old men preaching about judgment day and the wrath of god. They spewed nonsense how this country (USA) is destined for failure and doomed unless… Continue

The original judaism- pure Mesopotamian myth

The Hebrew creation myth describes a world view completely fitting what you would expect of Bronze Age people.

The original Hebrew opens with: "in the beginning, god created the sky and land" (heaven and earth is a mistranslation).

Yahweh places a barrier between the land and the sky, perceived as an ocean, in order to stop the water from falling. I should mention that the word… Continue

So, you wan't a war on Christmas...

In the United States there is a widespread idea that there is an ongoing "war on Christmas" waged by atheists and in general, people who prefer a secular government in which every person has the same rights. As usual, this idea is proposed by the whiny religious right (mainly conservative Christians).

Sometimes they will…

Why Jesus gets a bad rap

This being Christmas time, it is typically open season for those who don't participate or believe in Christmas  to question the legitimacy of Jesus. I have seen arguments of people who obviously have read at least some of the Bible who use passages to prove that God doesn't exist and that Jesus doesn't love them.

There are many passages in the Bible that are not self evident, but require study. Those of us who have studied anything know that there are 2 ways to "pass the test" in…

I Like Christmas

I was sitting in my office today.  I was alone as almost everyone else has taken off for the holiday.  I had  Pandora on Christmas music.  I listen to a lot of Baroque, Renaissance, medieval, celtic and new age music anyhow and that was the flavor of my Christmas music.  I also had Trans-Sibrian Railway and Manheim Steamroller.  I really enjoyed it.

I like Church.  I don't mean the religion.  Or The Church.

I like the Christmas Service Happy Music…

Willful ignorance

I love Christmas time. The general kindness from people around me makes me feel all warm and fussy.

I'm the only atheist in my family, but it really hasn't bothered me, since they've never seemed fundamental or intrusive in any way. I announced my atheism about a year ago, and all I got was a "why", which I answered as well as I could, and then an "ok", and that was pretty much it. I've always lived a pretty secular life, so my lifestyle didn't change much, but my way of looking at…
