Divine impulses: Christopher Hitchens

This is a really good interview with Hitch. The first part has clips of the whole conversation while the rest of it is the entire conversation, so there can be a little repetition, but it's not bad. I don't know why it was done this way, but that's how it was done.

Part 1:

Alternative Defence of Atheism

I have a blog? I have a blog. It appears I have a blog!

Christmas is a family time, and for some holds religious significance. A lot of atheists have theist family members and the subject of god often does make it's way into conversation. You're sometimes put in the difficult situation of defending your lack of belief politely and without causing offence, and often a direct defence of atheism isn't appropriate. The direct approach assumes the person you… Continue

I had a four hour long conversation with my aunt this evening. She was explaining to me in great detail: her faith, her political ideas, how she raises her children, so on and so forth. Myself being a very liberal atheist, I mostly stood there, trying not to have a disgusted look on my face, and smiled and nodded. It was very hard for me not to tell her that everything she believes in is childish and wrong. After the very one sided conversation, I locked myself in my room and watched… Continue

Reason's Greetings everyone! - "White Wine in the Sun" by Tim Minchin

Here's a christmas song I can relate to! Whatever you call it, & however you celebrate it, it's nice to remember that what matters most in life are the people you love. Enjoy the time you have with family & friends in the one life we all know we have, for it may be all we've got. So Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Human Light, Festivus, Yule, the winter solstice, etc. Celebrate & enjoy the season, whatever the reason!

If you really like the song, please support… Continue

Preacher Jealous of a Real and Successful Entertainer

Rev. Fred Phelps, hungry for any press vis-a-vis attention has yet again made another outlandish statement.

I guess they all want to be the next Falwell or Robertson or Olsteen.

I kind of equate them to famous rock stars.

It's just that Robertson, Olsteen and the late (not late enough) Falwell come across as wanna be rock stars in the religious entertainment industry.

They have their TV shows, they have their big audiences, they have… Continue

“Hello, Mythical Beast!”

Are you up there in heaven,

Are you down there in hell,

Are you stuck in the tree

in one of its cells?

Are you in the cool water,

are you stuck on the leaf,

are you begging Jimmy Swaggart

to “Leave me alone please!”

Are you stuck on the moon

while your hands grope the sun

has your penis found a black hole

do you whisper, “You’re the one!”

When they call to you “Help me!”

do you plunge in the deep,

or are you that forgetful… Continue

Defending The Faith, And Morality, Of NonBelievers

Check out the link at the bottom of this post to listen to the interview from Fresh Air today on NPR:

Humanism--the belief that ethics and morality can be vested in rationality, rather than a supernatural deity--might sound like a departure from faith communities and culture, but according to Greg Epstein, it doesn't have to be.

In his new book, Good Without God: What A Billion Nonreligious People Do Believe, Greg Epstein responds to challenges against humanism that spring… Continue

Is Lady Gaga on a disco-stick ride straight to HELL? Fred phelps thinks so.

The Reverend Fred Phelps hates fags (not to mention Jews), and Lady Gaga loves everything gay. So somehow by the transitive property, it makes sense that the Kansas pastor would declare that God hates Gaga.

Here's the Reverend's press release with info on where you can join him and the Wesboro Baptist Church to picket Gaga's concert on January 7:

"Thou hadst a whore's forehead, thou refusedst to be ashamed...Will… Continue

I'm getting married.

We sorta figured it would come to this.

Despite our own personal belief that the government has no right to be involved with who we have sex with, the legal fact is that Colin is going to have to leave the country if we don't.

So anyway, it's going to be held at the Liberace mansion, (in his famous bathtub) Las Vegas.

Anyone wanna come? It's walking distance from the strip. Our theme will be Utterly Tasteless.

I need honeymoon ideas. Any vacation devoted… Continue

Holy feet my ass.

Holy mans amazing feet

A bizarre holy man has been arrested on child torture charges after horrified parents found him stamping on their youngsters' throats to cure them of colds. Self-proclaimed demi-god Jamun Yadav, 50, told police his holy Hindu powers allowed him to transfer divine energy from the soles of his feet. He said the amazing feets of magic allowed him to fight all illnesses in Katihar, eastern India. "This is… Continue

How I turned my family onto atheism! Also my autobiagraphy & why my name is "luvtheheaven".

I'd like to establish why I have such a username. But more importantly, I want to truly establish myself here since I'm new. :D I want to tell you all who I am and how I became an atheist. :D And also I'll end up telling you how I turned my family onto atheism. I know this is LONG, sorry. Insanely long truly. But in the future my blog posts will probably be a LOT shorter.

I don't believe (and quite frankly have never believed) in Heaven. I've also never believed in God I don't think.… Continue

Currently reading...

"The Moral Animal, Why We Are the Way We Are: The New Science of Evolutionary Psychology" by Robert Wright.

"A brilliant and troubling attempt to look into who we really are...Wright's book constantly goads the reader to introspection, to fresh perspectives about one's choices and place in society... A subtle and stimulating interpretation that deserves wide debate." The Boston Globe

I haven't finished reading it yet but so far it beautifully elaborates and adds to the… Continue

The Tyranny of the Irrational

As non theists it is comforting when we are reminded that we are not alone in our frustration. For many of us, the only other atheists, skeptics or freethinkers we have contact with are on line. None of us, in our ‘daily lives’, can speak of a community or work-place that is not affected to some degree by the influence of religion or the adherents to a religion. Whether it’s a prayer imposed on a room full of people before a company dinner or the ban on alcohol sales on a Sunday morning, it’s… Continue

Will I never learn?

Hello all. I've been a member here for a few months, but I never really introduced myself aside from a few blog comments, so I might as well take the opportunity to say hi right now.

But in any case, some recent events have led me to conclude that whatever hope I had for the enlightening power of the internet is severely misplaced. And no, it wasn't Youtube this time that did it.

I was on facebook earlier tonight, checking through my various notifications, when I noticed… Continue

And just like that, I was dead.

No, seriously! I was dead, just for a few minutes, but dead nonetheless. Long story short, on Sept. 25th an allergic reaction to a supposedly innocuous pill, caused my throat to close, shutting off my breathing and within minutes I was dead, literally.

But this rant is not about my ordeal from that night, which I can’t deny, was scary and surreal, and ultimately ended up with me waking up in the hospital, incredibly tired, with a sore throat and an extremely bruised chest, after 7… Continue

Facebook Mistake...Christmas :-(

So forgetting my dad had a Facebook account, I listed myself as atheist on my account. I am 23 and live with my boyfriend a town away from them. I thought nothing of it until my parents said it was their greatest disappointment seeing me listed as atheist. Now it's almost Christmas. I want to hang out with them and have fun. And I like going to church just for the music only at Christmastime although they would hate that reason. They say they may confront me and boyfriend about our atheism. We… Continue
