I am also a member of Atheists-in-action (a French site). I got an email from them yesterday.
Confronted with death threats (unfortunately, like many other free thinkers… including ourselves), Kacem El Ghazali has let us know that he wanted to resign from his activity as a delegate for the organization.…

The Problem of Evil
If God is willing to prevent evil, but is not able to
Then He is not omnipotent.
If He is able, but not willing
Then He is malevolent.
If He is both able and willing
Then whence cometh evil?
If He is neither able nor willing
Then why…

Review of the Smithsonian Channel's special on the story behind The Exorcist
The Silliness of Religion
I was doing some reading and came across George “Goofy” Bush’s statement that, “God wanted me to be President….”
And all this time I thought it was a frivolous lawsuit filed with the U.S. Supreme…

My Favorite "Letters From the Earth" Excerpts
Samuel Clemens, more commonly known by his pen name Mark Twain, was indeed a freethinker of his time. I'm not quite sure if he was an atheist or not: wikipedia notes that he was a Freemason, but he was most certainly not a fan of organized religion----especially Christianity. "The fleets of the world could swim in spacious comfort in the innocent blood it has spilled."
Few literary works have made me laugh out loud as much as Twain's "Letters From the Earth", which is a book…

A Rarity...On occasion I'll crack. (But I'm curious if there is a trend among atheists. Are more of us "cracking"?)
It's a rare, rare occasion that I will engage in any form of "debate" (I use the word loosely, considering, well...you know) with strangers who are of fundy persuasion. Yesterday, one of my childhood friends (with whom I am Facebook friends--cliche, I know) posted a religiously-natured Facebook status update in the form of a question. I didn't automaticaly comment what I really wanted to write, but I asked if the question was rhetorical, or if…

Ann Druyan, talking about her husband, Carl Sagan

“When my husband died, because he was so famous & known for not being a believer, many people would come up to me — it still sometimes happens — & ask me if Carl changed at the end & converted to a belief in an afterlife. They also frequently ask me if I think I will see…

Got empathy?
I don't normally like writing blogs - takes me too long to hone what I want to write into something that I am happy sharing, and the inspiration to write passes.
But I was linked to this blog entry today and I think it is important enough to share. Here is the link. Here is an excerpt:
Today I don’t have to think about men who don’t believe no means…

The Christian God's Relative Morality
Christians like to throw around a concept that I would like to reexamine today: absolute morality. These thoughts are my own, but this is probably something that has been addressed many times by more competent freethinkers than myself. At any rate....
Please, if you haven't already, take a gander at www.proofthatgodexists.org. The main topic of this little exercise is absolute morality. It's hard to get around the point that…
