You Can’t Have Morality Without God

I know some of this has been talked about before, I just wanted to state my opinions on this subject and include things that might not have been stated before.

As an Atheist, I am constantly hearing from Christians that morality would not exist without the word of God instructing us on how to live our lives. Though I’ve found many things in the bible to dispute this claim, I will stick to the most well known set of ground rules in the bible, The Ten Commandment.

Most may not… Continue

Death Threats again from religious fundies.

I am also a member of Atheists-in-action (a French site). I got an email from them yesterday.

Confronted with death threats (unfortunately, like many other free thinkers… including ourselves), Kacem El Ghazali has let us know that he wanted to resign from his activity as a delegate for the organization.…

The Problem of Evil

If God is willing to prevent evil, but is not able to

Then He is not omnipotent.

If He is able, but not willing

Then He is malevolent.

If He is both able and willing

Then whence cometh evil?

If He is neither able nor willing

Then why…

Review of the Smithsonian Channel's special on the story behind The Exorcist

Last night I watched a fascinating show on the Smithsonian Channel about the (alleged) events that the movie The Excorcist is loosely based on. In case you are not familiar with the story, a thirteen year old boy appeared to slowly become possessed by a demon. The event happened not longer after the unexpected death of his aunt. Weird things are said to have happened in the house and marks started showing up on the boy's body. The family took him to… Continue

The Silliness of Religion

The Silliness of Religion

I was doing some reading and came across George “Goofy” Bush’s statement that, “God wanted me to be President….”

And all this time I thought it was a frivolous lawsuit filed with the U.S. Supreme…

My Favorite "Letters From the Earth" Excerpts

Samuel Clemens, more commonly known by his pen name Mark Twain, was indeed a freethinker of his time. I'm not quite sure if he was an atheist or not: wikipedia notes that he was a Freemason, but he was most certainly not a fan of organized religion----especially Christianity. "The fleets of the world could swim in spacious comfort in the innocent blood it has spilled."

Few literary works have made me laugh out loud as much as Twain's "Letters From the Earth", which is a book…

offending theists

hello everyone!
I am an atheist and I don't hide my thoughts on religion, no matter what religion or sect of religion.
I post videos and articles about religion on Facebook and Twitter.
I have Christian friends on both sites.
But, I was told not too long ago that me just stating my point of view is offensive.
I have Christian friends that post verses or whatever on my wall....I dont get offended.
I have other theist friends who post…

A Rarity...On occasion I'll crack. (But I'm curious if there is a trend among atheists. Are more of us "cracking"?)

It's a rare, rare occasion that I will engage in any form of "debate" (I use the word loosely, considering, well...you know) with strangers who are of fundy persuasion. Yesterday, one of my childhood friends (with whom I am Facebook friends--cliche, I know) posted a religiously-natured Facebook status update in the form of a question. I didn't automaticaly comment what I really wanted to write, but I asked if the question was rhetorical, or if…

'The "New Atheism" is not new at all' - from Martin S Pribble blog

from Martin S Pribble blog

I have too many things floating around my head right now to make a real point with this blog entry, so bear with me while I go on a cathartic rant.

I have recently seen a lot of criticisms about the "New Atheist Movement" saying it's disruptive and threatens to destroy society and all it holds dear. Some even say it will cause the end of the world. Most of the criticism is aimed at the so-called… Continue

Ann Druyan, talking about her husband, Carl Sagan

“When my husband died, because he was so famous & known for not being a believer, many people would come up to me — it still sometimes happens — & ask me if Carl changed at the end & converted to a belief in an afterlife. They also frequently ask me if I think I will see…

Developmental Psychology

Today, in class, at my incredibly conservative college, we had a discussion about the benefits of prayer for children (mostly at around age 8).

The study was done by Bamford and Lagattuta. They had groups of 20 4, 6,and 8 year olds and 40 college students from the University of CA look at pictures of faces depicting various emotions and picture stories of children in different situations who decided to pray. "They were asked when and why people might pray…

born Atheist?

I had an interesting conversation with my father (devout Catholic). My wife and I just had a baby a month ago. I told him my newborn daughter was born atheist. Of course he disagreed. His arguement had me thinking.... Is atheism strictly just a conscious decision? Or does ignorance of a deity/dogma constitute atheism as well? Does a newborn's limited mental cognitive ability justify atheism? Does someone living in the deep primitive tribal areas of the Amazon never exposed to religion… Continue

Got empathy?

I don't normally like writing blogs - takes me too long to hone what I want to write into something that I am happy sharing, and the inspiration to write passes.

But I was linked to this blog entry today and I think it is important enough to share. Here is the link. Here is an excerpt:

Today I don’t have to think about men who don’t believe no means…

The Christian God's Relative Morality

Christians like to throw around a concept that I would like to reexamine today: absolute morality. These thoughts are my own, but this is probably something that has been addressed many times by more competent freethinkers than myself. At any rate....

Please, if you haven't already, take a gander at www.proofthatgodexists.org. The main topic of this little exercise is absolute morality. It's hard to get around the point that…

Is Free Thinking A Mental Illness?

I was pointed to this article, and truth be told, I am quite offended. Obviously all of us would say that the answer to this question is a very loud NO, but the "experts" have a different opinion:

❝According to the newest addition of the DSM-IV (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of…

Woman Kills Baby by Jumping from Balcony to Avoid the Devil

Okay, take a good read, because this is un-freaking-believable!
