All to often I hear Xtians saying that that it takes faith to be an Atheist, just as religion requires faith. They typically state that the claims of the big bang or evolution are incredible and require incredible faith to believe. But to me these statements show a total ignorance or misunderstanding of the scientific method.
I will grant them this. The claim alone that the entire universe was born from the burst of pure energy and that we evolved from simpler organisms are pretty… Continue

August 18, 2009Earlier this month a letter to the editor in this paper caught my attention. Essentially, the writer tried to make the case that if Americans want good health insurance they should stop asking the government for help and simply work harder to get it.
The writer took the usual approach by people opposed to some type of a national health… Continue
One of the BIGGEST mistakes my parents made with me, and one of the reasons I became Atheist, is that they introduced me to "Children's Bibles" and brought me to "Sunday School" and other such "Children's Bible lessons" by the time I was 3 years old. [The preschool they sent me to was actual IN the church they currently go to... and trust me... the teachers would read us "Bible Stories" every school day.] Of course, as a child, I saw nothing wrong with what they were doing. Being like most… Continue
So classes have started up again for the fall semester. Currently I am enrolled in a class called World Religions which is essentially the study of different religions of our world. Our text book is the seventh edition of Living Religions by Mary Pat Fisher, in it being a very interesting definition of atheism.
"Atheism is the belief that there is no deity. Atheists may reject theistic belief because they seem to be incompatible with the existence of evil in the world, or because… Continue
Thank Darwin for Facebook. It is proving invaluable in my meeting and schmoozing with other atheists/skeptics. Plus it's great for meeting cool people everywhere. To any young 'uns reading this, you have no idea how much the internet has changed things.
One thing I see a lot of in this project is atheists who have double, and sometimes even… Continue
I am reticent to foul this landscape with notions of commerce, but... Pruett and I are going to AAIC 2009 in Burbank next month, and to mark the occasion, I put together a couple t-shirt designs, which, while not directly related to AAIC, I thought might be fun to wear around the venue.
Is anyone else from T|A going?
One depicts a hypothetical and obviously flawed design document for "man" with "god"'s approving signature.
This is my proposal to fix the American economy, prison system, immigration and health care.
All offenders in jail for non-violent, private substance abuse of 'soft' drugs are to be released immediately. Pot, mushrooms, painkillers ect. No plant life in it's natural form will be considered an illegal drug. It will be sold and taxed like any other consumer good. It will fall under the jurisdiction of ATF and the FDA will establish guidelines for recommended dosage. Like… Continue
Battle Star Galactica seriously pissed me off. Spoiler warning!
I know I'm a bit behind the times here, but I generally download shows I like, but since my move to Scotland, copyright laws have killed Hulu.
My cousin sent me out the final two DVDs with boat trim tabs. (Long story there.) So as the boys were out fixing the floating death trap we call 'work' I was snuggled inside, witness to the downfall of what was once a decent plot line.
Maybe there was something deeper that I… Continue
"Coop", one of the biggest retailer in Switzerland, decided to sell meat slaughted according to Islamic rites, which involves cutting the animals' throat with a very sharp knife and letting them bleed dry. For the most Islamic people this must be done without stunning the animals and they (the animals, not the people ) suffer a lot.
Slaughter animals without stunning is forbidden in Switzerland, so I think they will import the meat from abroad.
The thing that always gets to me with creationists trying to conduct rational discussions is the point they eventually get to.
These people will bend over backwards to disprove science, and will shower you with their “facts and findings”. Sometimes they will even back them up with official looking pseudo-science stamps of legitimacy, and keep a straight face while “debunking” the earth's age, the fossil record, and the mountains of evolutionary evidence - all in an effort to do their… Continue
