Opponents of evolution want to make a place for creationism by tearing down real science, but their arguments don't hold up

By John Rennie

When Charles Darwin introduced the theory of evolution through natural selection 143 years ago, the scientists of the day argued over it fiercely, but the massing evidence from paleontology, genetics, zoology, molecular biology and other fields gradually established evolution's truth beyond… Continue

On Loss and Belief in an Afterlife

I recently lost a relative, a cousin. I barely knew her, but we had been in the process of reconnecting after nearly 25 years. The circumstances of her life and sudden death are what make it especially poignant to me and are what made me decide to write about it.

First, she was young, only 31. She had a sister only one year older than her and they were very close despite the physical distance of living across the country from each other. They texted each other constantly and had… Continue

To give you some back story she is Catholic. When I was born she attempted to have me baptized with out the permission of my father. she and my aunt went to do it with out him knowing and the church wouldn't do it with out the consent of my father, which i think is the only smart thing i can sat the church has done...

She does not attend church, but claims to pray nightly. she has a rosary in her car and one… Continue

Dangerous Religion

Growing up I was in a fairly religiously ambiguous family. One of my cousins married a friend of mine whom was religious. Everyone started having kids at the same time and the next thing I knew, I was the lone wolf. I had a conversation about religion with one of my aunts once who asked, "Where do you get your morality?" My response was, "I don't have Jesus to forgive me. I have to live with my actions." I think that I struck a chord in her. Of course it changes nothing in her, but it did… Continue

Think Atheist Bracelet Causes Furor, Questions.

Morgan Matthew generously sent me a Learn to Think Atheist bracelet a while back and I have not worn it until recently. I am getting married August 8th and decided I would wear it during the ceremony. As a precursor, I wore it to the rehearsal dinner where my evangelical mother saw it. She kept asking what it was so I let her take a hold of it to read it. Once she comprehended the words she recoiled as if it were a venomous serpent, wiping her hands on her pants. As she got drunk, she spent a… Continue

The Strange Case of Francis Collins

Posted August 5, 2009

by: Sam Harris (www.reasonproject.org)

It is widely claimed that there can be no conflict, in principle, between science and religion because many scientists are themselves “religious,” and some even believe in the God of Abraham and in the truth of ancient miracles. Even religious extremists value some of the products of science—antibiotics, computers, bombs, etc.—and these seeds of inquisitiveness, we are told, can be patiently nurtured in a way… Continue

Examining the Examiners

Here is an excerpt from my latest Examiner article:

And so it begins with their blog posts on Think Atheist and you get teased with three or four sentences and then a link to click on if you would like to read more. Michael Rosch is an Examiner. According to Wikipedia, "Examiner.com is a news site based in Denver, Colorado that allows local citizen journalists to share their city-based knowledge on a… Continue

Duelity

duelity Duelity provides a different take on creation versus evolution. With a slightly humorous, and definitely ironic reversal of roles. The creation story is told in a very scientific manner, while the big bang and evolution story is told in a poetic religious manner.

Besides this seeming like a fairly unique idea, the creators have made the two videos so that you can watch them separately, or at the same time.…
