The Pledge and Our Money

I just got done answering a poll about whether the US should omit "Under God" from the Pledge of Allegiance, and naturally I said that it should be omitted. To me it isn't just the fact that I don't believe and God or religious figure has a place in the US government but the fact that the general population feels that the current pledge is the original. After proving to the many other people that answered this poll that "Under God" was in fact added in 1954 and showing them what the original… Continue

From our friends outside the U.S

Not My God is about the experiences of atheists in America because the U.S. is in the unique position of being a staunchly religious nation in the developed world. It’s part of what makes America America: having a gun in one hand and a bible in the other. As a result, atheists have it a lot harder here than in, say, France or Japan.

I recently spoke with a Turkish man who told me that, contrary to what I thought, it was easier to be an atheist in Istanbul than in the U.S! I still… Continue

"Remember your leaders, ..."

I just had to post a blog about this verse;

"Remember your leaders, who spoke the word of God to you. Consider the outcome of their way of life and imitate their faith.' (Hebrews 13v7)"

Below are a couple of "leaders" that xtains should consider "the outcome of their way of life". I would love to see who else you all can find to post.…

Canadian scientist aims to turn chickens into dinosaurs

After years spent hunting for the buried remains of prehistoric animals, a Canadian paleontologist now plans to manipulate chicken embryos to show he can create a dinosaur.

Hans Larsson, the Canada Research Chair in Macro Evolution at Montreal's McGill University, said he aims to develop dinosaur traits that disappeared millions of years ago in birds.

Larsson believes by flipping certain genetic levers during a chicken… Continue

Innocent Man Killed by the Moral Majority

Cameron Todd Willingham has been executed for Arson that resulted in the death of three of his little girls. In a review of the evidence from the fire, an independent expert claims that there is no reason to call this fire an arson. His statements about the Texas State Fire Marshall were more acute, The state fire marshal on the case, Beyler concluded in his report, had "limited understanding" of fire science. The fire marshal "seems to be wholly without any realistic understanding of fires… Continue

Congress Goes to Recess - Secular Successes and Failures So Far This Year

Congress at Recess As nonbelievers I think 'separation of church and state' issues tend to show up on our radar much more easily than it does for believers. Too few believers realize that separation of church and state is what allows them to practice their flavor of Christianity. So many who push for more Christian influence in government don't seem to realize that they might end up disagreeing with the flavor that comes to power. If only more believers realized this, I think we would have so many more… Continue

I am a Disabled US Vet and Use the "Socialist" VA Healthcare System Exclusively. This is My Story.

Since certain people in this country keep bashing government run healthcare systems, I wanted to take a moment to share a story about a recent visit to the VA. I use the VA for all of my healthcare, so this story represents a typical experience.

Friday 10:15AM Arrive 15 minutes early for Appointment, scan my VA ID card into the check in kiosk (check in is electronic to speed up processing), sit down in the waiting room.

10:25AM Nurse calls me into the screening room. I am… Continue

Dawkins latest on the Creationists invasion of the classroom

Just found this little gem and wanted to pass it along, I especially like the title the article.

My only comment is that how sad its going to be in say 100 years when all the remnants of our achievements no longer exist and whats left of the human race has reverted back to cave man and cave women because of this unyielding urge by the religious to excise all and any… Continue

I sometimes wonder
Who I am.

I've seen several atheists here talk about Zeitgeist here in a positive way. By Zeitgeist I mean the movie, not the general term for "spirit of the ages." Zeitgeist is not a friend to atheists, or anyone else. Yes the first section is about religion and from a skeptical point of view, but they substitute supposition for fact in the same manner that they do for the sections on 9/11 being an inside job and the banking system being a world wide conspiracy. I'm no friend to religion or capitalism,… Continue

John Swaile AKA reverendjohn

It saddens me to inform the community of Think Atheist of the passing of my beloved John, yesterday.
He truly enjoyed this site and all of it's members. He proudly wore his Think Atheist bracelet wherever he went. He died knowing he was loved and that he was not alone in his philosophies.
Live long, live brave and always question!
Thank you,

I Love Me Some Books

Waking up at 2:30am is not fun. Compound that with the inability to recapture your sleep state and you have a recipe for this blog post. But why was I having dreams of high voltage electrical wires falling on me? Really?

So I am perusing Think Atheist, listening to CaraColeen's music playlist and debating which book I should tackle next after I finish The Blind Watchmaker. I'd really like to jump right into Dawkins soon to be released The Greatest Show on Earth, but alas it won't be… Continue

Clueless is as clueless does?

I'm not sure if it's clueless or masochistic . . . but on our forum there's some Christian guy challenging atheists and Christians to make belief videos and pit them against each other on YouTube. If he's never watched a Hitchens or Harris debate or if he's never debated against an atheist himself, then I guess he must be clueless. But if he has . . . then he must be a masochistic glutton for punishment.

I have no intention of making such a video -- at least not for this guy's… Continue

Fear of mysterious technology

Genetically modified food. Microwave ovens. Cell phones.

What do these technologies have in common?

Many people are terrified of these technologies, due to the myths & legends surrounding them, the sketchy ways they were conceived, and/or their own ignorance of how they work.

Let's start with genetically modified food.

Genetic modification is scary stuff, at least to the average Joe. There are many instances in popular culture where… Continue
