OK folks, we have a genuine islamophile in our midst. I have learned a great deal from his videos, but I doubt it is what he hoped I would learn. I would venture that your average Muslim is not any more noxious than your average Christian, but both fundamentalist Christians and fundamentalist Muslims are scary! Just so everyone is clear on this; I am armed and I do know how to use it!

my fiancee is a catholic from ghana. usually religion isnt an issue between us. but our son is approaching school age and my other half wants him to go to a catholic school. being an atheist i am dead against this. he also wants our son to go to church and learn the bible. my opinion is to allow my son to make up his own mind about it. i want my son to learn about darwin, science and evolution so if he ever does learn the bible he will have 2 sides to think about.

I posit, that while religions foment for the existence of God, the mere existence of religions is pretty conclusive evidence for the existence not of God, but of Satan. Traditionally, it is Satan's overriding desire to spread pain, evil, suffering, disharmony, etc. among mankind. What better way to achieve his desires than to create religion. Religions assures that various groups of humans will be constantly struggling to eliminate each other. It does not allow for compromise, how can one do… Continue

Today, we're going to talk about faith.
You can't say I don't tackle the Big Important Topics here. In this one post, I'm going to cover the entire foundation of almost every religion in the history of ever, the pillar on which all theology is founded, and the subject over which perhaps more hours of scholarly work and profound philosophising has taken place over the centuries than any other. The one elusive, ethereal concept whose significance has plagued the most enlightened and… Continue

You have no doubt run across this story
about some band t-shirts depicting a cartoonish version of evolution in my home state of Missouri. The shirts show the evolution of brass, as in the musical instruments, and utilize the well known cartoon of the progression from a monkey like creature to man. It caused some parents to get upset and at least one… Continue

After reading this article by my friend Leo Babauta
. I was in shock because this is exactly what happened with me growing up, especially in elementary school. I was always be called out not being able to expressive myself. I am not going to go into details but this article sums it up. :]
“Our culture lies. They say they want to encourage and reward individuality and creativity, but in… Continue

It is my contention that if one grew up without ever hearing of gods, religion, and the supernatural; that when one was presented with these concepts for the first time, one would laugh one's ass off!

There are so many points about being free of religion and attendant guilt that celebration is possible ever moment of every waking day, I do not know where to begin. Abolish fear by simply denying the existance of a judgemental condemning distant non-existant deity. If there was a deity of note, it would have no gender at all. But for an atheist, there is no point in speculating about this imaginary thing that I will not even label give a name.
Is it inconsistant to you that are… Continue

I was sitting in a hotel room this past week and I discovered an incredible story about a very large ministry that told people through televangelism and the glory of god, if they would donate money "God" would give them back double in return. Now this may seem a little too crazy but I have found the wikipedia page and I saw the program with my own eyes and its very, very real.
So real that the I.R.S. had to step in and take control of "God;s" money in order to protect other people… Continue

" OK, what’s this book about? It’s about what happened to the American government after "conservatives" gained control of Congress in the 1990s and the White House in 2000. It’s about the disastrous decisions that government made, which have created the enormous problems we face now. It’s about the corruption that rotted the Congress. It’s about how traditional conservatism has nearly been destroyed by authoritarianism. It’s about how the… Continue

I originally intended to lead with a discussion of the "spanking sticks" that are offered for sale and even for free on various xtian websites. The Idea is that the correct (xtian) way to encourage positive behavior from children is to use corporal punishment. Admittedly, some of the web sites were neo-nazi's or extreme fundamentalist but if they think it is a good idea then it must be. Specifically, without physical punishment children will grow into vicious monsters. Godless heathens that… Continue

To the credit of opponents of health-care reform, the lies and exaggerations they're spreading are not made up out of whole cloth—which makes the misinformation that much more credible. Instead, because opponents demand that everyone within earshot (or e-mail range) look, say, "at page 425 of the House bill!," the lies take on a patina of credibility. Take the claim in one chain e-mail that the government will have electronic access to everyone's bank account, implying that the Feds will rob… Continue

There are few things that can get under my skin like the education system in America. We do not do enough to teach our kids about the real wonders in the world through logical inspection and we fail miserably to teach them to respect or understand history. Schools that respect the secular requirements of our government fail to impart the importance of these subjects. What education are we denying children when they are educated by a school district that makes “belief in god” a goal in their… Continue

Yep, I said it.
Its time to teach religion in schools... All religions.
Its time to 'teach the controversy'...as the fundies like to say. (when talking about teaching creationism/ID as opposed to evolution)
Teach the Controversy... Christianity is just ONE theory among many and unlike evolution has no more support for its legitimacy than any of its competitors.
Give children ALL the information on the various religions and let THEM decide which ones… Continue

In his Wednesday general audience, Pope Benedict, linking atheism and secularism with environmental destruction, summarized his new encyclical’s teaching on man’s duties towards the environment:
Is it not true that inconsiderate use of creation begins where God is marginalized or also where his existence is denied? If the human creature's relationship with the Creator weakens, matter is reduced to egoistic possession, man becomes the "final authority," and… Continue
