The significance of technology advancement in the development of human behavior.

When my mother and her twin sister were children, they used to pretend that they had telepathy.

I don't have to pretend.

I have unlimited text messaging.

The evolution of travel has been amazing, just in the course of a very few lifetimes.

Across-Ocean travel has gone from an anomaly to a rarity to occasional to daily.

The time it takes has been reduced significantly with each step along the way.

(Adaptation and evolution. It always…

3.6 billion people suffer from thanatophobia

Yep, thats right. Thanatophobia is the fear of death. I looked up the number of christians and muslims, and it's 3.6 billion. So 2.1 billion people are christian, and 1.5 billion people are muslims, I say this because these people all affirm to some kind of afterlife. So thats some ammo you can use against theists. Ask them if there afraid of death, and if they say yes then tell them that they have thanatophobia. This number could also be a little higher if you ran into some hindus or other… Continue

Jesus Vines!

Here is an article talking about some vines that grew on an utility pole.  Apparently it looks like Jesus!

Wait, I think I see...nope, never mind.  Damn.

Venting Session #1

So, I just need to vent this really quick because it really really makes me angry...

My sister and I are home alone earlier today when all of a sudden a man neither of us know rings the doorbell. I was on my way to answer the door when he just tries to walk into our house--luckily the door was locked. I then made the decision that I wasn't going to open the door to a stranger who thought he could just walk into my house univited. He then stood there for a little while, rang…

Baptized in the Church

As a child my parents went to a Baptist church where, naturally I was indoctrinated into the beliefs of Christianity and that particular denomination. I must mention however, that my parents rarely forced me to go to church. They did send me to Vacation Bible School, if only to get me out of the house for a few hours during the summer. Also, I always had the sense that while they believed in “God”, they didn’t particularly care to go to church, but they seemed to feel it was something we… Continue

Boredom Redux

So just yesterday I posted on the forums (which I learned was the wrong place to post [Thanks Robert! :P]) that I was bored.

"None of my peers seem to offer me intellectual stimulation. I grow bored with their conversations (I realize how haughty that sounds, and I don't intend any egocentricity). I can no longer distract myself with YouTube or my Xbox. I need real, interesting, substantial, intellectual stimulation! Anyone care to help me out? Skype me or something.… Continue

Distressed With Religion

My mom and I had an interesting discussion yesterday. It centered around the fact that she couldn't believe I was an atheist (my stepdad had outed me to her when she came back from work after he found out Sunday so thank him for that). To be fair, it wasn't a totally horrible discussion. My mom and I hardly talk like that with each other at all, so it felt intimate in a way.

But she kept bringing faith into the picture. What was really heart-breaking was when she said that if it… Continue

So Help Me God?

I recently reenlisted in the US Navy and had to take the Oath of Enlistment again.  I was a Christian when I originally joined, but have since become an atheist.  There is a part of the Oath of Enlistment for the US Armed Forces that inlcudes "So help me God".  It is optional, but I failed to mention to the officer who administered the oath that I would be omitting that part.  Instead I had printed out a copy of the oath that did…

Pope Tweets for First Time

If only Saint Peter could have sent a direct message to the Galatians. The first pope never had the chance, but his successor in the apostolic succession, Benedict XVI, has joined the microblogging service. The first…

I think I understand....

I've hit a wall. I'm back home, no job, just graduated, no friends (yet). My boyfriend is 750 miles away. I do have my family, but they don't really understand. They want to, and they're trying. I'm stuck at home by myself with nothing but the internet to keep me company. No job means no gas money or fun money.

I think I understand why people stay with religion. I can't say I've ever faced adversity like this before, and saw no real reason to believe in anything before. Things are… Continue

Get Your Thinking Hats On! Scientist-Politician-Atheist Offers Own Money For Origin of Life Prize

This is great! About time someone put a carrot on the stick of moving things forward with proving the origins of life argument. Especially from an atheist like Lonsdale!  I would guess a 50K initial prize with prospects of 2 million more will get our reasoned minds working! Kudos to Mr. Lonsdale for this.

We Need Atheist Missionaries

We need atheist missionaries. Period.

It would be nice if we all lived in Never-Never Land where TV shows like Glee and Nova do all the work for us. A one-two punch of inclusiveness and scientific reasoning would shed light on all the theist strongholds in the US, and people would wake up and say "Gosh, I have been sooooo wrong supporting Intelligent Design and churches run by homophobes."

We don't live in that world.

Just as the US couldn't…

Church has Atheist billboard removed

I'm not shocked, but I am still pretty pissed off. The billboard was to feature local atheists where I live. It was going to be some sort of coming out and to aid in social acceptance. Some church folk complained and now they have to "relocate" to another billboard. I'm sure when it’s on a new billboard it will be removed too. It’s things like this that make me want to scream and tell people to eff off. I see their billboards and their religious propaganda every single day. It wasn't giving…

VAINGLORY VI

VAINGLORY VI

(The following is a journal entry left by the 4th century monk, Evagrius Ponticus concerning his discovery of “the eight deadly sins”)

Dear Lover of the Fictitious Character,

Last night in my dream, I stabbed the “God” and the “Savior” which you so desperately still seem to need an innumerable amount of times.  He’s dead!  It’s dead!  Hey, whatever image or thought that you tried your hardest…

GREED III

GREED III

(The following is a journal entry left by the 4th century monk, Evagrius Ponticus concerning his discovery of “the eight deadly sins”)

Dear God,

I write to you today, as my prayers still go unanswered, to commit in writing my confession to you, as dear Lord I have sinned against you in thought, word & deed.  My own greed has forced me to steal from my neighbor, who was not at home this…

LUST I

LUST I

(The following is a journal entry left by the 4th century monk, Evagrius Ponticus concerning his discovery of “the eight deadly sins”)

Dear God,

I put my fingers in the oil lamp again just now.  The flames did sear my flesh, but I cannot begin to withdraw from these thoughts that I have been having as of recent.  I roll torridly in my bed with images of unnamed women.  I roll torridly wanting to…

My parents reaction to me saying "I'm an Atheist".

After I told my parents I was an Atheist, they have never acted the same around me since. I didn't post this before because I wanted to get familiar with the site and meet some people, but anyways, It all started about 4 or 5 years ago when I was having doubts about the existence of god and I was starting to feel very uncomfortable in churches. I believe I was about 13 or 14 when I told my parents I was an Atheist. The reaction of my mother and what she said to me still hurts me today. After…

Thought Experiment - What if God appeared

My brother, an atheist like me, posed to me this humorous thought experiment, and I thought it was worth playing the game and posting it here:

God - the bearded white guy who looks a lot like me (he wears more robes than I do) - turns up on Earth, having decided to prove his omnipotence once and for all.

He turns up everywhere you go, in all your recent photos, and in all the morning…

Life Is Worth Living

Every denomination of every religion sits on their branch pointing out things from the book they use as a guide and say "I'm on the right branch over here so come join me." and on some branches people will say "Hey really everyone is just on the same tree and if you just get on this tree anywhere you feel comfortable then you will be OK." I have no interest in climbing the tree and testing the different branches when I can walk on the ground and get…
