Christian Nation? What?

Before I even get into this, I would like to say that I am an Atheist and I do not beleive that a man named Jesus Christ even existed, let alone that we should be following the teachings of a man who lived over 2000 years before us.

Every two days or so I see a meme or post come across my newsfeed about how this country is a Christian nation founded on Christian beliefs. This is usually in reference to how the gay community is ruining our nation or has some hidden agenda to turn all…

Am I overreacting?

Hi all! I figured it's about time for my first blog post and I also have something that I would really love to hear opinions on.

I'm from the Bible Belt and the dating pool for an atheist is pretty small here. Also add in that I just got out of a 4.5 year relationship, (where I always avoided religion talks with the very religious boyfriend), it's been tough. So I recently joined a dating site. And it's amazing because it seems like people are less afraid and will happily tell you…

My Children's Book for Atheist Kids

My mother recently came to visit me. She spent the past 4 weeks pushing her religious garbage onto my son when, after she told him how god would want him to act, he responded, "Nana, god isn't real! God is bad!"

So while I was at school she made him recite prayers and tried to scare him with godly behavior (he's always watching and all that crap.)

If I were agnostic then I doubt I would care so much, but this pernicious seed of belief could ultimately drive a wedge between me…

Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson: Atheism Analogous to Discussion on "Non-Golfing"

Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson recently confirmed himself as agnostic and distanced himself from atheism. Whilst I respect his position, centred on the fact he concentrates his time as a scientist and an educator, I found it somewhat careless to equate atheism to discussions on "not-skiing" or "non-golfing".

If the majority of human beings spent every day praying to the gods of golf; Waging war based on who's golf swing was the righteous technique; Condemning…

The Reality of Hope

My recent conversion to atheism has been quite uneventful compared to some of the horror stories of fellow atheists who have been denounced as evil and rejected and scorned by their family and friends.  I have not been vilified or rejected by my wife, family, friends, or co-workers.   My family and friends continue to be a loving and supportive force in my life. Some of my family and friends still seemed…

Lack of Atheist Support for Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson?

Let's start of with a few basic identifying points: I am an anti-theist gnostic atheist. I understand what I am implying by claiming 'gnostic'. Imagine atheism is as the theory of gravity is. Would you contest someone stating gravity is a fact despite not knowing every tiny detail? If so, then nothing I am willing to expel energy saying will change your mind on my gnostic atheism. Some my wonder why I'm making a defense about this here. My point will be clear as I progress.

A Full Life: A nice point of view

My brother sent this to me. I had never seen it before even though it's been circulating for some time. I thought that I'd post it here in case you've never seen it either.

The Mayonnaise Jar and 2 Cups of Coffee

When things in your life seem almost too much to handle, when 24 hours in a day are not enough, remember the mayonnaise jar and the 2 cups of coffee.

A professor stood before his…

So I see a post on the Facebook wall of the Freethought Film Festival Foundation from Open Air Cinema, inviting us to join their contest to win an outoor movie system for our organization. I've always envisioned to some day be able to do a tour of freethought films with free outdoor screenings in various cities. Local secular groups often invite me to present, and it would be such a fun way to expand the reach of freethought films. The contest registration was easy…

Catholic church offends and disgusts me (news article response)

Hi All,

I checked the news on this morning and found this article. In which the catholic church both offends and disgusts me.

I will start by explaining the latter. It makes the assumption that a woman needs a husband to be complete, and urges young women in Australia to marry quickly or they will miss out. Why, as a man,…

Dan Savage called out by NOM's Brian Brown for a debate; Savage says, "You're on, motherfucker!"

For those who may not have heard of him, Dan Savage is a gay rights activist - and an outspoken atheist. He engages in many talks around the country, and in the media, concerning gay rights; and since the fight against gays is almost always religious in nature, he tends to call out the contradictions and overall hostility within the Bible.

There's a pretty popular video of him speaking at a high school journalism convention the overall speech is about bullying, and gay bashing in…

Numbers 11:1 to 14:39

Why Harris Lost the "Is Good from God?" debate to Craig

I just stumbled upon a year-old YouTube video named, “Sam Harris gets destroyed by Dr. William Lane Craig”. It’s the 2-hour University of Notre Dame debate held on April 7, 2011, between Harris and Craig. It was titled: “The God Debate II: Is Good from God?” The video can be found at the bottom of this page.

And guess what? Harris really was destroyed by Craig!…

Evolution vs. Intelligent Design: 6 Bones of Contention

Why Intelligent Design?

On November 24, 2009--the 150th anniversary of Charles Darwin's On the Origin of Species--the theory that new species can arise from old ones through natural selection is still met with some resistance. (Related: …
