When you consider that the Bible is above all, contradictory, it's actually impossible to be a Christian.
A passing thought...
"If anyone comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters—yes, even their own life—such a person cannot be my disciple." ~ Jesus
This explains a lot of the occidental self loathing.…Continue
So lets see if I can come up with a conception of God that will irritate the hell out of everyone. OK. Assuming God exists what do I think It/Him/She/They is/are? I think that God is the 99%. By that I mean the 99% of you that is actually running your body and mind right up from creating new red blood cells to most of your "higher" brain functions. Another way to think of it is whenever you refer to yourself as "I" you are referring to less than 1% of the total of what "you" actually are.…Continue
This is an interesting point. I was raised Roman Catholic and went to Catholic schools right up until college. Religion is a community builder, I'll give it that. We knew who we were, why we were, and where we were and there was no questioning any of these things. I think that is a good place to start for way more children than not given the gargantuan uncertainties built into the world of even the most secure child. My sense of it is that religion provides a stabilizing force to the mental…Continue
FREEHOLD, N.J. — A family is suing the Matawan-Aberdeen Regional School District and its superintendent, seeking to have the phrase "under God" removed from the Pledge of Allegiance that students recite every day.
A lawsuit filed in Superior Court in Monmouth County on behalf of the…Continue
I feel like I am about to boil over and burn.
Some back story...because I don't know if I've mentioned this before, though I'm certain I have.
I was molested by my grandfather when I hit puberty, so was my older cousin...so were many of our friends before it happened to us, and after. My grandfather felt up a little girl at my grandmother's memorial service.
When he died I was thrilled. Not relieved, not filled with the urge to forgive, not at peace...
Gah, this is so jacked up. I don't know what to do. I need some advice guys, because I can't loose this job too. I haven't been on here in a while because I've been pretty wrapped up in finding a decent job, but I hope some of the regulars are still around with their usual wit and wisdom. This blog post is going to be a rant, but please give it a look-see.
My new coworkers are obsessed with the sexuality of the guy I just replaced and they've been talking about 'how it totall…Continue
Hello everyone. I'm an artist and writer and someone who is interested in community. I've been listening to a lot of Dan Dennett on youtube and find his argument that if secularists want to end the more harmful excesses of religion we have to provide institutions that do the things that religion is good at.
My view of religion is that God created me to not believe in Him, and in my conversations with Him,…
I am Greg, husband of the recently deceased White Unicorn, Suzanne Olson-Hyde. We are/were both confirmed atheists of long standing - roughly 50 years each - we both gave up religion in our early teens.
But now that Suzanne has 'ceased to be', I am having an internal struggle between my logical self - still DEFINITELY an atheist, and my 'fantasy', wishful thinking self that would love to believe that Suzanne still exists somewhere and that she is being looked after.
i will not drink the blood of a fool
when the glory of the lord shall shine
and blind men to his crimes
as the lies that he had promised me
would nail me to his tree
when all the angels in the dark
would brand me with the devil’s mark
i’d curse and cry with my last breath
‘i’ve still a half a bottle left!’
leave me alone, save someone else
i love my sinful, wicked self
take off of me this pit bull’s leash
save it for a…
My mother's funeral is Wednesday, 4/23/2014 and I'll be giving at least a part of the eulogy.
A little help here...and maybe an opportunity for discussion in general on the subject.
What is an 'Atheist Eulogy'? What can my differing view of death bring to the table at a Wake?
I know it is totally inappropriate for me to try and convert the audience...I just wish Christians would give me the same respect. Having God on your side is no excuse for being rude...but then,…Continue
My mother, Zella Mae Jarrett of Boone County West Virginia ceased to exist at 10:58 PM on Saturday, April 19th, 2014.
I'll write more later.
My 10 year old son asked me yesterday, seemingly out of the blue, "Why did Hitler want to kill the Jews?" I said, "I don't know for sure, but it happened in the context of a long history of people persecuting the Jews." "How?" he asked. "Well, people blamed them for things they weren't responsible for, like disease." He asked, "You mean like the Black Plague?" "Yes, like the Black ," I said, slowly shaking my head. Then he asked, "Do…
Dead man’s Switch
i had a dollar in my pocket
at least, i did before i spent it
on some trinket or some locket
that now is lost and i resent it
there is nothing quite as gone
as a dollar when it’s spent
nothing leaves you as alone
wondering where the dollar went
a dollar anticipated
is a great treasure for a man
but a dollar dissipated
grates on your soul like sand
to owe a dollar to another
is a dollar spent on guilt

I'm sorry, but I had to stop listening to this bit at about the fourth paradox due to being out of breath from laughing. How long can you last?
I write a lot of these posts before I go to bed at night so if they seem disjointed it's because I'm sleepy and working on a beer buzz. Just up front about that.
My mother is in a nursing home. She came close to dying this past week, and may still die, but right now she's alert enough to make her own decisions so I'm out of the loop as far as deciding for her. She still needs to be in a assisted care facility but it doesn't look much like I have much input into the…Continue
I'm not sure you are all aware of this, but the UK recently legalised same sex marriage and good for them.
But of course the religious organisations are usually the main groups that always have an objection to equal marriage rights. Except this time they are turning on one other own. The first Church of England priest has married his same sex partner and suffice…Continue
So we have yet again some more hypocrisy and arrogance from the Catholic Church. The Catholic Church are apparently selling a mansion previously owned by a pedophile. But it seems that the Catholic church is still far too lacking in humbleness, still too arrogant, still to self righteous and still to hypocritical to be willing to seek the property of a gay couple.
Oh they have no problem protecting…Continue
The purpose of this blog is only of the intention to lay the cards on the table so to speak in order to avoid any confusions or inconsistencies that may be assumed.
Firstly I have always held the greatest deal of respect for the atheist community, especially for its opinions and stances on organised religion. I am still of the opinion that organised (or rather…

From 1990 to 2000 I was a Neo-Pagan.
During this period I was a Rune Caster. I created my own Runes...any Witch must create their own tools...Aleister Crowley, the self proclaims 666 Antichrist...through the Golden Dawn sect of the early 19th Century...taught that every practitioner had to create their own set of Tarot Cards...the divination, oracle function of the Witch, whether Gardnerian or Buckley breed, had to create their own sacred tools.
This extended from the…Continue
