Letter to a friend

This is a marginally edited letter to a friend in response to a video link he had sent me.

Hey mate,

as I said, I watched the video ( http://www.abc.net.au/tv/changeyourmind/ ) and, as you suggest, opposition think tanks have proved an effective media strategy, not one however that I think will be useful to us. We have a plethora of our own, our problem is mainstream media access which is in…

Haphazard Thoughts on Religion: Part 1

This was taken from my blog, M's Illustrious Penmanship. Despite the pompous title of my blog, it's mostly movie reviews and critical commentary. This particular post I figured would fit here at Think Atheist.

This is the first part of Haphazard Thoughts on Religion, which I…

god works in mysterious ways – Tweet of The Day

(Want to favorite it, retweet it? Here’s the original Twitter link.)

Right, because the only explanation is “god did it”, and when god’s motives seem fishy, it must be god’s “mysterious ways”.  *facepalm*

Slam Dunking God

The naturalist understanding of morality asserts that we have evolved empathy as an impetus to cooperation. Combined with personal experience, empathy leads most of us to a "Golden Rule" sense of morality. From experience, I know what hurts me: with empathy, I know the same things likely hurt you too. Experience and empathy is all we need to decide most moral matters. "Do unto…

My response to a Muslim who sent me 27 tweets

Thank you for sending me 27 tweets trying to save my soul, which i don't have from hell which does not exist upon being judged by a god that isn't there. Wanting me to go to a heaven, which does not exist is a nice though. It still bewilders me what i would do with 72 virgins, and would they stay virgins afterwards? How long would it be before all 73 of us would be bored by each other? Eternity can be a very long time you know.…

A Special Promise

A surge of ‘knitted skullcaps’ is transforming Israel’s military — and that worries their secular countrymen. The Ark of the Covenant

Pastor Agnostic's Genesis

In the beginning, god was created in the image of Man.

And the earth was without form, and void, and darkness was upon the face of the deep.

And 14.4 billion years ago, all matter was created, and from this explosion eventually came atoms and matter, which grew large and firm, and when sufficient amount of matter gathered together, the matter could not help itself,  and began to fuse and from that fusion of matter escaped particle wave forms of various frequencies, and… Continue

robot prostitutes

have you heard the shit festering

about the robot prostitutes in the making?

heard the christians & republicans

whining their way into a “debate”

about the moral concerns that might come about

as a result of having a robot do

what an exploited, sex trafficked individual

might once have?

see, if robots start doing the street corners

or dancing in the cubbies in Amsterdam,

Allah; transcendental/temporal - a logical analysis

Often times when I engage in a debate with Muslims, I am told that Allah is transcendental, i.e. that he exists outside of space-time and that he is not temporal i.e. he does not exist in the physical world.

If we accept this assumption, then this leads to a number of problems one of the main problems being that in the Qu'ran Allah talks about angels and souls and their interaction in fact, Dr Zakir Naik argues that…

Secret Service Colombian Prostitution Scandal

I have been reading with some amusement the moralizing coverage in the US press of the Secret Service/US Military Colombian Prostitution Scandal. I have tried to distill what I have read into a spoof news article that from my perspective sums up the issues here:

Secret Service Colombian Prostitution Scandal

The Colombia prostitution scandal widened Tuesday as it emerged that Secret Service agents and military personnel brought back at…

This is lame, but I want to win it, so vote for me!(:

PETA does a contest every year for the cutest vegetarian alive or whatever. I always voted and stuff, but never entered it. So for some odd reason, I felt compelled to join it. PETA encourages the contestants to post contest on facebook and stuff to get more votes for yourself. But, I don't have a facebook, twitter, tumblr, stickam, or anything else that all the kids my age have. So I thought I'd post it here. I know it doesn't exactly relate to atheism, so for that, I apologize. But it was…

Remembering...

I gave someone (a Christian I love very much) a copy of a book recently at their request. I knew that the book would probably cause them to do some questioning about the origins of their religion. I thought it was cool that they asked me for it. To make a long story short, this person read about a chapter and then stopped. I’m not sure if he’ll pick it up again, but it didn’t seem likely that he would. He said he had “heard that stuff before,” and then gave me an apologetic response to it. I…
