Can there really be moral absolutes?

In my last (and first) blog post, I brought up the problem that atheists usually have with religious people (that of, "atheists have no morals"). Emma Coomber brought something up that I agree with and have been thinking for a while now.

Something came up today during lunch while I was talking with a Satanist friend of mine.

It's common for religious people to claim that atheists have no morals as we have no god to derive them from and have no god to fear in the deviation from our morals. But then if you ask them what they would do if god wasn't there to punish them, there are times when they admit that they would act without caring about others or about the consequences of their actions.

Why won't Christians and Jews admit it?

The vast majority of Christians and Jews have never read the bible.

Religion for most people is basically an identity system, not a belief system. You are almost always the same religion as your parents. You don't choose a religion. So rejecting your religion is like rejecting your family, or your tribe.
