“Faith is believing what you know ain't so.” – Mark Twain
What is required to believe in the existence of God? If you ask a theist they would quickly and confidently say "faith". So what exactly is faith? Speaking as someone who spent my formative years being brain washed by a religion that pervaded every facet…Continue
In an article in the Christian Post Reporter the author opens with the following comment:
"World famous atheist, Christopher Hitchens, made a surprising revelation recently that his former debate opponent, outspoken evangelical scientist Francis Collins, is behind a new experimental cancer treatment that he is using."
Why is it so surprising to believers that Hitchens would would like, give credit to or even thank…
Did you know...
...that the Theory of Relativity is a hoax by Einstein to attack Newton and his Christian basis for action-at-a-distance?
So, this year I am going to get married (tax breaks are incredible!) to a lovely woman from a religious background. Yay for me! (Secular ceremony with a fun, personal, non-religious spin) I have, of course, hit some bumps in the road with the whole Atheist thing and her religion. Nothing to bad but I did read member Walter Maki's blog post about his family and thought maybe I could contribute to this conversation a little with my own experiences and maybe help me sort out…Continue

Recent discussions have been had on how conservatives are a minority when it comes to "freethinking" sites. You think so?
I wonder why thinking people reject conservative propaganda. I mean, if it's a rational position wouldn't we all climb on board? We have a christian political movement waging war on the middle class, on the poor, on science, on the educated, on education, on worker's rights, on women's rights; does anyone really think this resonates with the freethinking…
Texts must be read in their original language. A Muslim will always insists that if you want to understand the Koran, you have to read it in Arabic-which is true for any text.
Things get lost in translation. Always.
The Christian English bible is full of translation errors. In fact, the strongest argument for Christianity being a false religion in my view, is the fact that the entire dogma is based on a foreign translation – and things always do indeed get…Continue
*NOTE 1* This can be taken as anything relating to the good guys losing, bad guys winning, nobody winning. Basically a non-Hollywood ending/ Non-Disney happy ending.
*NOTE 2* There is no particular order to the list.
*NOTE 3* I understand there are many other films that could make this list more than a top 5 could encompass. That being said this is in no way a down mark on other fine films not listed.
5.) The Way of the Gun (…Continue
A solid understanding of theory of mind (ToM) is extremely important to understanding some of the fallacies that derive from its misapplication. ToM “is the ability to attribute mental states—beliefs, intents, desires, pretending, knowledge, etc.—to oneself and others and to understand that others have beliefs, desires and…Continue
A thought a cured to me the other day.
If a Christian girl and an Atheist boy got together one night and she got pregnant, what would be the out come of the kid be, an Agnostic? lol
A question was asked in the Common Misconceptions of Christianity post. "If you think something is myth, fine. It's another matter to show why; to point out mythological development, and demonstrate the literary genre under consideration is mythical." The answer to this challenge is one that will take more time and space than a retort deserves. For those that don't know some of what I'm about to lay out, burying it in a response seems to be a disservice to the information and…Continue

Atheism (especially in America) is often labeled as angry. It seems to be hinted that beauty and poetry stem from other (perhaps more "spiritual") ways of living.
I can appreciate the culture expressed through the ages that can be attributed to the passion of people inspired by their belief in things beyond themselves and their lives, as Dawkins says "Cultural Christianity".
However, in writing music I have found atheism a very rich source to draw upon for…Continue
So, it is my first day on ThinkAtheist and I am really excited. It has been a very long time since I felt any acceptance for my beliefs or at least wasn't rejected straight away because of them. Here is a little about me and my journey. Would love to here how some of you got here.
I am born and raised atheist. I never experienced any religious indoctrination or influence in my childhood (outside of the occasional trip to Grandma's, then it was just something to sit through till…Continue
