The Unsubstantiated Decree: A Critique on Papal Condemnation of Abortion in the “Evangelium Vitae”

In 1995, Pope John Paul II wrote the “Evangelium Vitae,” a letter directed at the entirety of the Roman Catholic Church. The primary topic of this encyclical is the sanctity, value, and inviolability of human life. Along with discussions of murder and euthanasia, the Pope includes a lengthy section in which he condemns abortion as a “particularly serious and deplorable” crime against life (Hurley 23); he immediately lists abortion alongside infanticide with no justification for how… Continue

Bible Contradictions in Graph Form

So I'm wasting time not working and run across this blog that was linked to Reddit. It's short and to the point in getting out a Graph put out by the Reason Project. it lists 439 bible contractions and where they are found in the Bible. Often not in just one place, but multiple locations showing the conflicting statements everywhere. It's so cool. I will certainly be saving a copy of the PDF for myself. the link is zoom ready but… Continue

I Pledge Allegiance...

I caught this on NPR today.

Not only did I learn a new term, "Hapax Legomenon" (which means a word or phrase used only once in a written record or language) but about how the pledge of allegiance was meant as, according to the 9th circuit court of appeals, a

"Proud…

Respect

As an atheist, I end up in alot of religious debates. These can go any number of ways, usualy depending on how much alcohol has been consumed.

For the most part they are usually mild mannered musings on the nature of life, the universe and everything (sadly it isnt 42).

Other times they can be quite heated debates where I openly share my opinions on organised religion in all its forms.

One thing I do come up against on a regular basis is the concept of…

Praise the Lord and Pass the Ammunition boys!

Well now it looks like the Gun Toating Bible Pounders got busted by the FBI because they were planning a “revolt” to “save” America.

But fortunately, we were saved from them. For the time being that is.

Might I go out on a limb here and wonder if Sarah Palin is their poster girl?

And just why do they think (I’m using that term loosely) they have the right to “save” us?

I sure didn’t.

And I’m a vet.

It’s a piety the Cold War isn’t on anymore. I honestly believe that when… Continue

The Atheist Who Celebrated Easter

I just need to confess: I still celebrate holidays. In fact, I love them. LOVE them. I grew up in a home where holidays were not related to religion. Plus, I knew pretty early on that they were rip-offs of pagan celebrations, which meant to me they up for grabs for anyone, really. Holidays always represented the Four F's: Friends, Family, Food, and Fun. They are bright, happy, sparkle-points of my childhood, and for that reason they remain a part of my life.

So, I continue to…

Health Care Reform: Canada rejoices for y'all!

I've been watching some of the American news coverage of the health care debate with great interest. In fact, i imagine most Canadians have been taking a special interest in the debate. Universal health care is one of the cornerstones of our way of life, and even though the system has it's challenges, a recent survey showed that 90% of Canadians support universal health care and think Obama is on the right track. I can… Continue

Police Declare War on BitTorrent Sites, Operators and Users

Following the domain seizure of Russia’s biggest torrent site,
Torrents.ru, Moscow’s Ministry of Internal Affairs has announced it will
not only start shutting down BitTorrent sites and pursuing their
operators, but also hold users responsible. One proposal suggests that
file-sharers should be treated the same as criminal counterfeiters.

Creation of a cult

I'm writing this on a few hours sleep, so it might not make sense at some points, but since I'm so tired I'm sitting here just thinking about it.

I have witnessed first hand how people get pulled into a cult. A cult is similar to religion. A cult is similar to a group of collective ideas. Some of these ideas can be outlandish, ignorant, idealistic... well I don't know.

Anyway, I have witnessed first hand and been on the receiving end of a cult's wrath.

Teetering on the Edge of the Wagon

So, last weekend, I went to this giant conference in Anaheim, CA called RE Congress (http://www.recongress.org) It for Catholic Religious Educators. As I've said before, I still spend a good part of my time helping my mom out in the church, and this including going to conferences such as these.
To tell the truth, I had a great time. Of course, it was only a five day trip, with 1.5 days spent at the conference, 1.5 days spent sight seeing in and around…

The Massive Boy Scout Sexual Abuse Cover-up and the Silent Acceptance Through Participation

This week it came to light that the Boy Scouts of America have kept “Perversion Files”; thousands of files that outlined sexual abuse in the BSA and how they systematically covered it up. As the BSA propagated acts of prejudice against nearly a quarter of the country’s population by banning…

Surrounded by Fundies!

My boss is a cruel bitch. Yes, she's my friend... but she's a cruel, mean, heartless bitch. She's also an atheist, so I think she did this as a joke on me. She hired 2 travel nurses to work for 9 weeks who are from the BIBLE BELT; one from Texas and one from Alabama. Between the Catholic Filipinos and the white Christian Fundies, I'm in atheist hell.

We're busy and learning a new computer charting system (I'm a teacher), so we really did need the extra help. But these…
