I live in a small town in Idaho. Idaho is not known nationally for it's open-mindedness or acceptedness, but I'm in the middle of nature and I don't have to play well with others if I don't want to, so it's never bothered me. My husband is disabled so he stays home with our two daughters (and snowmobiles!), and I am a full-time nursing student. By full-time, I mean I have no life except nursing school. It's the toughest thing I've ever done.
I love my fellow students,…

Apparently, some of the attendees at my freethought shorts program a couple weeks ago were "rocked" by the presentation. There were about 20 humanists in attendance at this particular meeting, and I did not ask for demographic information (against my instinct) before I agreed to visit the group. I was at least 20 years younger than 95% of the group. Upon this realization, it was clear that independent films were not likely their forte.
The program of films that I'm… Continue

Why is there a God?
There a billions of stars in a galaxy and millions of galaxies in the universe. Many of these stars aren't even medium yellow like our sun. The odds of a planet forming to Earth-like standards are actually microscopic, even if other planet types can form the basics of life. Our planet is one tiny speck in a vast universe. I would almost call it insignificant.
What makes you think we're the center of some grand cosmic scheme of some importance?
If God is so…

Hello my lovely heathens!
I wanted to open up a space here to get some constructive criticism and suggestions on internship positions at Think Atheist. For those of you who don't yet know, I have become the first official Think Atheist intern, and have been helping Morgan out behind the scenes getting a lot of grunt work off the ground for the website. However, one of the goals I assigned to myself as a part of my work here was to help design a more dedicated internship program to…

"Those afraid of the universe as it really is, those who pretend to nonexistent knowledge and envision a Cosmos centered on human beings will prefer the fleeting comforts of superstition. They avoid rather than confront the world. But those with the courage to explore the weave and structure of the Cosmos, even where it differs profoundly from their wishes and prejudices, will penetrate its deepest mysteries." ~Carl Sagan

U.S. Marshalls go to Shutter Island, a mental hospital for the
criminally insane, to find an escaped prisoner and stumble across a
bigger mystery. Brief, but frequent moments of shoddy writing and
cinematography damage the experience of what might have otherwise been
a memorable and insightful film.
United States Marshalls Teddy Daniels (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Chuck
Aule (Mark Ruffalo) are dispatched to Shutter Island to investigate the
disappearance of…

Today I was approached by a friend of mine who began a conversation with me with the statement, "I know you're an Atheist, but..." and proceeded to invite me to attend his youth group for a week. Now, knowing full well that he was the son of two missionaries, and is moving to Brazil this summer to learn Portuguese to do so, I expected this. The odd part was I didn't expect to feel as angry as I did with the conversation that followed. I kindly declined his offer, but he persisted, telling me it…

Today my instructor said this about printing press v internet
Deborah,
Both
mediums have created an information revolution. Gutenburg with “The
Gutenberg Press” needed to print something important and great in order
to show the power of the press so he printed the “Gutenburg Bible”. He
duplicated and mass-produced the word of God allowing the mass public
domain to read about and learn from the bible.… Continue

I remember a weird moment that happened after my dad died. My mother had called me in hysterics and told me my dad was dead, had died in his sleep. I went to his house and it was true. He looked like he was sleeping, but his lips were a frosty blue and his face was the color of dusty miller. I remember not feeling anything at first and then having intense waves of grief and fear and sadness break over me, over and over again.
I went outside and shouted, then threw up. My dad had been…

Okay so.
I visit facebook and play those apps.
I have several friends on there who I don't know but they also play those apps.
There is one girl in particular whom I don't know but she sends me gifts and things so I keep her hanging around on my facebook. But I think I'm gonna delete her, because no facebook app is worth seeing "I love Jesus" all over my wall and news feed.
Okay so, I never really talked to this girl before until one day she posted "Life is worthless…
