The pot of the gold at the end of the rainbow. Why is it there that everybody seeks? Its not about the end result, but the journey getting to the metaphorical pot of gold. The pot of gold seems to be religious in nature, to me at least. Some simply want facts to assure them that they will get that pot of gold. Those people never find it...[they find logic]. I think the pot of gold is there to keep the faith. A promise
of something wonderful to come. Faith alone is a controlling factor.…

Refutations of Pascal’s Wager
and the Ontological Argument
When debating a theist about the existence of God, there are two arguments that many of them tend to rely on as last ditch efforts. These are Pascal’s Wager and the Ontological Argument. However, neither is valid because they both have been refuted.
Pascal’s wager, devised by Blaise Pascal, states that it is better to believe in God and be wrong than to not believe in God and be wrong. If one believes in God…

Moderator: We're here today to debate the hot new topic, evolution versus Intelligent Des---
(Scientist pulls out baseball bat.)
Moderator: Hey, what are you doing?
(Scientist breaks Intelligent Design advocate's kneecap.)
Intelligent Design advocate: YEAAARRRRGGGHHHH! YOU BROKE MY KNEECAP!
Scientist: Perhaps it only appears that I broke your kneecap. Certainly, all the evidence points to the hypothesis I broke your kneecap. For example,…

A professor at the University of Vermont, Nicholas Gotelli, got an invitation to debate one of the clowns at the Discovery Institute. Here's what they wrote.
Dear Professor Gotelli,
I saw your op-ed in the Burlington Free Press and appreciated your support of free speech at UVM. In light of that, I wonder if you would be open to finding a way to provide a campus forum for a debate about evolutionary science and intelligent design. The Discovery Institute, where I work, has…

Prof. Nicholas Gotelli, a scientist in the biology department of the University of Vermont has a wit sharp enough to cut yourself on.
He was solicited (yes solicited) by the
Discovery Institute (A don't-think-tank of creationists masquerading as a serious research institute) to set up a debate at his campus. The admittedly…

So, our good friend Bp. Richard Williamson has
agreed to review the evidence. I can only state just how relieved I am that the esteemed Bp. Williamson is reviewing the years of documented evidence collated by various historians to validated their findings. Arrogance and ignorance: You're doing it really, really well.

Six states have passed a law banning atheists from holding any public office. The law also prevents atheists from testifying as witnesses in court. Here's a link to the article:

This is absolute bull shit.

A few weeks back
I posted a blog on how theists fear of the unknown is what causes them to oppose science. The author I pulled the source material from, Paddy Shannon, points out that reason and logic are pushing superstition out the window, but leaving behind an empty room. "What we need to do … is recognize the emotional vacuum this is creating, and strive to fill it, before…

I had kind of a cool experience yesterday.
I was sitting waiting for my physics discussion to start and I had brought Dawkins' "Unweaving the Rainbow" along to pass the time. From behind me I heard a voice "so...are you reading Dawkins for a class?" I turned around to the guy sitting in the row behind me, who looked like he had been a bit nervous to ask me. I replied, "no, just for fun. I like his stuff."
It was great the way his expression completely changed and he…

(( A re-post of a blog entry I posted elsewhere a while back ))
Yesterday, a couple of co-workers were talking about current events, and one of them said ‘Well, there are two sides to every story, and I’ll listen to them both.’
This got me thinking of the assumptions inherent in such a statement, and the fallacies that can and often do appear in such discussions.
The first and most obvious potential fallacy is right in the statement itself. Two sides. Either-or.…

It fascinates me to speak to religious people, in any shape or size, because I feel like I am missing the ability to believe in a god. I believe instead in the limits of human imagination ad attribute most of modern day speculation about the beginning of the universe to this limitation. We are creatures bound to this four dimensional world and we cannot think outside these four dimensions. Why is it impossible to picture infinity, timelessness, spacelessness, non-existence..? This weakness in…

A few days ago, I went with a friend to a public lecture on global warming at the local university. I sat beside a friend of mine and rolled my neck a bit to stretch it out.
"Eww. Does your neck always do that?" She said, mildly in disgust.
"Do what?" I replied.
"Make that sound?" The sound she was referring to was the sound that my neck has made for years, best demonstrated by a sixteen-wheeler driving over bubble wrap.
"It has for a while now, why…

I am an atheist because it logically makes sense. I am an atheist because science matches it. I trust experiments that have been correctly conducted and are unbiased. I am an atheist because it is the only thing that gives me hope that a secular America (blasphemous, I know) would be full of sensible people. I am so tired of this religious shit. Religion is used to manipulate millions of young and old thoughts, dreams, hopes, and expectations. Religion is only a tool of control. Nothing more,…

A direct message from
Daves not home to me.
I can only imagine that you're becoming increasingly inundated with mail of all kinds, from criticism and hate to props and suggestions of how to make this better. So I'm somewhat reluctant to put my note onto the "suggestion pile" but I have so many "atheist ambitions" that I feel I must say something.
A thought that…
