Quote from "Life in the Universe"

The textbook for my Extraterrestrial Life course this semester is “Life in the Universe” (Bennett and Shostak, 2nd Ed., 2007). One of the introductory chapters discusses the science of life in the universe; beginning with ancient astronomy and the advent of science by the greeks, covering the Copernican revolution and the development of modern science, and discussing the nature of the scientific method and science in the modern world. It’s a fairly basic intro. I think it’s aimed at… Continue

A Simple Solution to World Hunger - Stephanie Foran

“Sell the Vatican, feed the world” (Silverman, 2009). It’s a saying that has recently started circulating the Internet. Sarah Silverman, a popular comedian, made a video and posted it to the popular video-sharing website YouTube, and her movement quickly caught on. Initially coined for… Continue

BE GONE , BIBLE VERSES!

WASHINGTON — A Michigan defense contractor will voluntarily stop stamping references to Bible verses on combat rifle sights made for the U.S. military, a major buyer of the company's gear.

In a statement released Thursday, Trijicon of Wixom, Mich., says it is also providing to the armed forces free of charge modification kits to remove the Scripture citations from the telescoping sights already in use. Through multimillion dollar… Continue

Prayer forces plane to land.

PHILADELPHIA - A Jewish teenager trying to pray on a New York-to-Kentucky flight caused a scare Thursday when he pulled out a set of small boxes containing holy scrolls, leading the captain to divert the flight to Philadelphia, where the commuter plane was greeted by police, bomb-sniffing dogs and federal agents.

The 17-year-old on US Airways Express Flight 3079 was using tefillin, a set of small boxes containing biblical passages that… Continue

Did it have an appointment?

Lorton, Virginia - Doctors at a small practice in Virginia got a big surprise when a tennis ball-sized meteorite punched a hole through their roof. No one was injured.

Dr Frank Ciampi says the rock struck the two-story building around 5:30 pm on Monday in Lorton, about 32km south-west of Washington.

He says they heard a loud bang and found the projectile punched through the roof and ceiling, raining down pieces of wood, plaster and… Continue

Atheists who swing to the right

From Not My God

I don’t often hear from atheists who are politically/socially conservative. I know they’re out there, albeit probably much fewer than their more liberal counterparts. I’ve heard at least one atheist say that he’s a truck driver, voted for Bush twice, etc., and no one would guess that he’s an atheist. True, I wouldn’t have.

I’m a liberal myself, although it does disconcert me to a… Continue

Conclusion to previous blog...

Xtard say's: "You are blinded to the truth. Blinding your mind to who you are serving". By this point i've had enough so i say: I disagree. I'm not blided but in fact more open minded and tollerant than most xtians. I demand the truth. Not cosmic fairy tales. If its real, i believe in it and the way i see it is: if you are too stupid to understand science then religion is right for you. EDUCATE THYSELF... You would think with that she would STFU and leave me alone. But nooooooo. I get this… Continue

Concrned xtians send me stupidity.

I often get email from what i like to call concerned xians. I sometime think they just want a debate or maybe to hear the "other side's" opinion about god. What-ever the case is i get a gang of this crap, all the time. (i love it) Some are complete assholes that i just block but most of them seem like their trying to do me a favor. They seem obligated to spread the word (YO) of god. It makes them feel good about themselves to be doing "gods work". (which is apparently trying to convert… Continue

Rebirth

Well! How to begin.

I guess I'll start with my motivation.

When I was a kid, I'd gone to my local Church every Sunday. I didn't know why I went, I wasn't all to sure that there was a god- even at that time, but I did believe in the history that the Bible claimed to have happened and so I divulged myself into that.

Growing up, I had always been alone and felt a little isolated, so I felt comforted by the warmth I felt from the Church every day I… Continue

"Haiti Gets Bibles – Needs Hospitals" - via Atheist Climber blog

Our universe is a place of massive physical forces, and given the microscopic size of humanity in the scale of it all, it’s not surprising that we get caught up in the midst of these forces. And when we do, lives and infrastructure are lost on a relatively massive scale.

In 2004, the Indian Ocean Tsunami, caused by a massive earthquake off the west coast of Sumatra, causing massive devastation of homes and communities, and taking more than 230,000 lives in Indonesia, Sri Lanka,… Continue

My personal Atheistic Manafesto

No, I am not newly atheist. I have been without god since 2005, when I fully realized I was brainwashed Catholic, and that it was indeed acceptable (and extremely plausible) to have absolutely no belief in god.

I am not of the conviction that I should try to sway anyone towards my opinions. That would be hypocritical of me seeing as how I absolutely detest Christianity and everything it stands for. That being said, I’m not going to elaborate on why I told the church to fuck off, as I may… Continue

In Laws

My wife and I are not out about our views, at least not directly. I think that most of our VERY conservative and christian family suspects that we are not like them, but they just don't know exactly how different we are.

Anyways, I do love my family. I also love my wife's family. I would not deliberately hurt them. I think that in order for our children to have a relationship with any of their grandparents, its best if we just let sleeping dogs lie, and let them think we have just fallen… Continue

Atheist, Science, and the Search for Eternal Life

I need to preface this entire post with the fact that I am NOT a highly intelligent being. I am however, a dreamer and would love to witness how far we advance and evolve as a society. So, I propose this questions, At what point will we advance scientifically to where living to be an extremely old age would be a reality?

Let me first say that I do not think it is possible to live forever, but I do think that with advancements in cloning we could eradicate disease, organ failure, bone… Continue
