As I have stated elsewhere on this site (and on my own blog, LotusGeek.com
), I am an "out of the closet" atheist. I am a bit unusual as an atheist, and by that I mean that
1) I have been married (mostly happily ;) ) for 25 years this June (that's twenty five YEARS
, in case you missed it), and I have five amazing kids (and one grandkid already!). Most of them are agnostic/atheist, and the rest I'm not sure about (I don't… Continue

I've lived in Orange County, CA for more than 30 years. I can remember when Robert Schuller kicked families out of their homes and claimed them under "eminent domain" laws to build his new megachurch, the Crystal Cathedral. He then created such masterpieces as The Glory of Christmas and The Glory of Easter in which he recruited volunteers to put the thing together and sold very expensive tickets. These megaplays were executed using many actors and live animals and having attended one many years… Continue

You can download it here:

I need to know what you think of the… Continue

My nosey facebook aunt just outed me to my grandmother. Apparently my grandmother is now freaking out. I've only told certain people, and I'm only friends with certain family members on FB. Did she ever stop and think that this was something I was planning on talking to her about myself, and that I wasn't ready? Honestly, at a loss here about what to do now.

Here's a site that I can appreciate even as a non-believer. http://peaceseeds.elysiumgates.com/
Anything that supports and shows inclusiveness between the religions I think is good. It shows a willingness to move forward, to evolve and that's what religion is going to have to do to survive.
I supported this kind of thinking back when I was a believer and I can still support now.....as its a step up from the separatism of… Continue

Lately ive been in some discussions with friends/co-workers on many things from religion and climate change to vegetarianism. These people are curious about my beliefs specifically on religion because they know im atheist. Ive found it incredibly irritating that shortly into the debate, after I can easily answer their questions on morality, meaning of life, or why I think the bible is a ridiculous book full of horrible acts....they always tend to say "you are over analyzing everything". Its… Continue

PORT-AU-PRINCE - Ten Americans were detained by Haitian police on Saturday as they tried to bus 33 children across the border into the Dominican Republic, allegedly without proper documents.
The Baptist church members from Idaho called it a "Haitian Orphan Rescue Mission," meant to save abandoned children from the chaos following Haiti's earthquake. Their plan was to scoop up 100 kids and take them by bus to a rented hotel at a beach resort in the Dominican Republic, where they… Continue

Forced Feedings At Your Local Catholic Hospital.
Posted by Ann Neumann - January 29, 2010
n November, the US Conference of Catholic Bishops changed the policies they use to govern all 624 Catholic hospitals in the country. As the second largest provider of health care in the US, the Catholic Church enforces 72 Ethical and Religious Directives at all hospitals, hospices, long-term care facilities and in all 60 of… Continue

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is funded by Bill Gates and Warren Buffet. This is the largest charity in history, and it's funded by non-believers. Warren Buffet is a "agnostic" who is moral enough that he lives in the same home he always has since adulthood. He's cognizant of his position in the world and rather than giving it to his children like Sam Walton did, he stated, "my children don't inherit my position in life." He has instead pledged the largess of his fortune to the Gates… Continue

Is it a shock that CBS is showing bias toward the religious right agenda?
But it's still infuriating!
CBS has rejected two unrelated ads
which were submitted to the company for the coveted Superbowl commercial air time. CBS claims that the rejection of the ads were for different reasons, but it's hard not to notice that both of these particular ads feature homosexual themes, both direct and in-direct.

In 2009 I let a friend move in because he was homeless. He agreed to get a job, but he never did. He never paid a dime of rent or utilities like agreed, and when I tried to kick him out, he threatened suicide. So I let him stay from January to September. Finally, I couldn't take it anymore. He was abusive and kept saying he was going to kill himself, and I couldn't afford to pay for the apartment by myself anymore, so I got evicted. I moved in with my mother.
Now, can I take him to… Continue

What kind of Gun would Jesus use to fight his enemies? What verses would he etch on his sites?
Will he have a job or live off the fruit and labor of others? Will he be a building contractor when he comes back to rule? Will he invest in stocks?
I mean we know (from the religious right) that he's a gun toting capitalist that believes in patriotism and pre-emptive strikes.... right?
How will the religious services change when Jesus comes back? Are they still going… Continue

I don't know what's more offensive - instances where people use the term 'atheist' as an insult or instances where people react to the term 'atheist' as an insult. Recently I read an article about a bit of Indiana state legislature that's achieved both of those instances in one fell swoop.
You may have heard about this already, but there's a bit of a to-do in Indiana regarding the standards of child-care facilities in religious institutions. The issue is that there seems to be no… Continue

Scientologists 'heal' Haiti quake victims using touch
Amid the mass of aid agencies piling in to help Haiti quake victims is a batch of Church of Scientology "volunteer ministers", claiming to use the power of touch to reconnect nervous systems.
Clad in yellow T-shirts emblazoned with the logo of the controversial US-based group, smiling volunteers fan out among the injured lying under makeshift shelters in the… Continue

finally, after five years in florida, i will be heading back to the bronx next month. i am so glad that i will finally escape this state. there are tons of great people in florida, and a lot of atheist and freethinker groups, but most are a good drive from me, and i never get to go to any of the meetings. i've yet to even attend a meeting for the local freethinker group because of scheduling conflicts.
it's going to be an interesting move. although i'll be moving to a much more liberal… Continue

Under the current law, religious groups can restrict jobs to believers and refuse to hire people whose private conduct is inconsistent with their teaching.
The Government had been proposing to water down these restrictions in Harriet Harman’s Equality Bill, which was being debated in the House of Lords yesterday.
However, the key amendments to change the law were thrown out by peers in a vote by 216 to 178 in a humiliating defeat for Miss Harman.
Miss Harman can… Continue

1. I apologize to all the homosexuals. I am sorry that I believed in a religion that condemns you. I am sorry that for many years I thought that the bible was right in it’s condemnation of homosexuality. I am sorry that when I no longer thought the bible was right about homosexuality being a sin, I did not raise a gigantic stink about it every Sunday right in the middle of the sermon… week after week after week… until the church issued a… Continue

A growing number of science students on British campuses and in sixth form colleges are challenging the theory of evolution and arguing that Darwin was wrong. Some are being failed in university exams because they quote sayings from the Bible or Qur'an as scientific fact and at one sixth form college in London most biology students are now thought to be creationists.
Earlier this month Muslim medical students in London… Continue

From Not My God
Not My God focuses on persecution and hatred of atheists. I’m not saying that I equate anti-atheism rhetoric with segregated bathrooms under Jim Crow laws or genocides. What I am trying to say is that many people in the US hate atheists, all else being equal. I’ve heard time and time again of people saying that they didn’t believe in God– without sarcasm, without “and neither should you,” without… Continue
