Why are you here?
I am here to become more confident in my identity as an atheist, and speak to others who also call themselves atheists.
The religion you left
Why you left your religion.
I ultimately left Christianity because of a number of factors.

For one, I had learned that one of the basic definitions of religion was a man-made thing that was created to explain that which peoples of the past had no other way of explaining in ancient times (from a sophomore year World History textbook, not verbatim). That knowledge was expanded after taking a Big History class at the university level, as well as an Intercultural Communications course at the community college level. People all over the world have, throughout time, created explanations for things to make sense, no matter the culture or the time period. Not only was my mind opened to the vast variety in the world, but I realized that the pettiness of saying one religion was true above all others was idiotic.

A second reason was realizing that there was a doublespeak in church, especially with the first one I ever attended. Yes, there were prayer requests that could be made to heal the sick and help during crisis, but the minute a high schooler requests for a youth group prayer on behalf of a beloved family pet, the pastor scoffs and treats the issue like a joke was told. Also, despite having believed that all were loved and accepted in the eyes of the Lord and His children, I realized that anyone who wasn't straight or a Christian didn't seem to fit the bill. Don't get me wrong, I have known and still know kindhearted people who call themselves Christians, but bring up premarital sex, homosexuality, or identifying as other than how you were born (just to name a couple of issues), the conversation won't last for long enough to be classified as an informed discussion.

Lastly, I left because I found that I can be a good person without labeling myself. Although it may be hard for some to believe, you can make moral decisions without subscribing to a religion, which means you can be a perfectly decent person without saying you associate with a faith system. Plus, I didn't want to be lumped in with those who only called themselves Christian, nor with those who were earnest about it. I didn't fit into either of those categories, and I feel much better now that I'm just me.

My Purity Ring

Posted on July 5, 2015 at 7:18pm 6 Comments

I got my first purity ring on my own, when I was still a Christian, in 2010. I understood the basics of the pledge involved---no sex before marriage, basically. I didn't take any classes, as I was away from both home a church to call home at the time, but I still wanted a purity ring. So one Farmer's Market outing later, I found a ring that was perfect---a plain band with a design on it (I later figured out that it was of elephants following each other). I printed out a Purity Pledge, and…

Should I be this frustrated?

Posted on June 15, 2015 at 7:47pm 10 Comments

As I've said in a previous blog post, I have yet to come out to my parents as atheist. That being said, that setting on Facebook has been set to "Atheist" from "Christian" for quite a while. Of course, the change is hidden from my family lists, but it's visible to everyone else. Now, this is not going to be a post about my feeling entitled for personal catering when it comes to what I see on my Wall or anything, but sometimes, things just get a bit frustrating.

I still have several…

A Recent Find Online

Posted on June 14, 2015 at 8:57pm 3 Comments

I haven't called myself a true Christian for a long while. In fact, it shouldn't have been surprising to me when watching an online documentary, that I was no longer of the Christian mindset. However, I was proved wrong today.

There are YouTube sprees that begin with cute kittens and end with tear-worthy proposal videos, and then there is the internet-wide search that I underwent. I got it in my head, and I'm unsure as to how it started, but I started browsing for any literature or…
