Age 12, I asked my father why he never came to church and he revealed that he was what he called a 'realist'. My escape from religion began then and, by the time I was 15, I had shed the shackles completely, despite there being compulsory church attendance during my three years as an apprentice in the Royal Air Force after the age of 15.
