I've been an atheist for 10+ years now, most of my family still thinks it's a phase. This doesn't bother me, whatever helps them sleep at night. My mom is the only person who believes it, she said "I'm not happy with it, but I would be a bad mom to try and see you for anything you are not." this made me so happy. I was about 19 when she said this, and it came after I spent a weekend babysitting my youngest cousin. That weekend was when I figured out the type of mom I wanted to…

Ten years?
Well here is an irony. My family is atheist. My brother "found Jesus" about 1976. He gave it up again around 2009. I guess that was a temporary phase. Only lasted 33 years!
Good morning! This caught my eye and even though I have not had this same experience I wanted to give you some incite from a parent. I think that you are absolutely right when you say "It's not my place, even if she is my child. I will be here with any answer I can give her, and I am willing to take her anywhere she wants to go to get the answers she wants. If she grows up to be a theist, then I will show her love still, because I want to raise her to love people for who they are, not who they believe in. I want to be the mother that was there when needed."
I feel the exact same way about my 6 year old daughter but I wanted to offer you a warning for the next year or so. I am not sure where you live or what kind of area you live in but I live in Southern West Virginia and its hell when it comes to being an Atheist parent.
My daughter is in Kindergarten and the FIRST day of school....FIRST DAY....She brought home a Bible in Schools fund raiser!!!! O_O
Upon closer inspection I noticed that they offer the program as soon as the first grade and I find that completely upsetting. Number one because its bible in the schools, number two because they are offering it at such a young age, and number three a local televangelist church is the ones pushing the state government leaders for this and they are letting it happen.
First grade? Do you realize what the children would have to go through? Like they learn about Noah's Ark now but later on in science class they learn that those animals on the ark have so many different diets, needs, eco-systems....etc. So how confused are they going to be? What do are they supposed to believe?!!??!!?
Since my daughter is still in Kindergarten I have decided to wait until the beginning of her next school year to talk to the principal, who is already a major bitch, and let her know exactly how I feel. And I am not going to be mean or condescending but I want to know what my child will be doing during this class?!?!?!
Is she going to be sat in a corner being punished for not taking the class or is she going to be in a room somewhere with a book, art, math, or science lesson???
I am NOT trying to put a burden on you shoulders for the future. But I thought that I would let you in on some more parenting advise. :-)
Hope you have a wonderful day!
