Tom replied to Unseen's discussion 'Drones—Is Impersonal Warfare Better?'
"I agree with you that seemingly guilty behavior is not a pretext for a death sentence, but what courses of action are still available when the subject in question cannot be brought before a jury? Again, not trying to be combative, just thought…"

Tom replied to Tom Baxter's discussion 'What logical error is this worldwide flood argument?'
"Did anyone mention the concept that watercraft date back to the neolithic period (around 10,000 years ago). So to quote Joe Rogan on the subject of Noah, "All those other people with boats, their shit didn't work.""

Tom replied to Violet Chartreuse's discussion 'I need debate help... Does good come from God?'
"Rick Santorum is a Roman Catholic, and seeing as how he is an American he most likely read the King James Edition or an English translation of the Latin Vulgate (such as the Douay-Rheims Bible). Either way, what you should be asking yourself is…"

Tom replied to Lindsey Harris's discussion 'Would you ever date a Christian?'
"I agree with Jewelz, it depends upon the personality types involved. However, as a fellow bible-belt atheist, I've also dated one or two vehement Christians. The lack of free-thought in believers is definitely a turn off, but I think…"

Tom replied to Laura's discussion 'Looking for Book Recommendation'
"Joseph Campbell wrote several books on comparative mythology, The Hero with a Thousand Faces comes to mind first. The book mainly deals with what Campbell calls the "Monomyth", and delves in his theories on the "archetypal…"

Why are you here?
For the open discourse of theology and spirituality. Also, it's nice to have a few other freethinking people to speak to, as they are few and far between where I live.
The religion you left
Why you left your religion.
Humans have an innate desire for immortality. Not in the sense of our bodies never dying, I think we have accepted the human body as mortal. I mean immortal in the sense of a desire for the human mind or awareness to outlast the body. The average person is not at fault; humanly narcissism dictates this. Religion of all forms takes full advantage of this desire. Your local religion will promise you some form of immortality, whether it be in the form of reincarnation, rebirth, paradise, resurrection, living in the clouds, or spending eternity on the Elysian Plains. The catch they use against you is based on another primal sensation. Fear. If you don't live as they want you to live, do as they want you to do, pray as they want you to pray, you will be stripped of your promised Utopia. At best you will be sentenced to another life until you have reached enlightenment, at worst you will suffer eternally in a lake of fire and brimstone. This conditional promise of immortality, coupled with an explanation for all of life's mysteries, facilitates religions' iron grasp over the average person. I have limited issue with other people buying into these archaic beliefs. However, I cannot abide seeing these superstitions pushed upon those who have not been given the chance to think critically.
