Isn't the part I emphasized, above, an admission that they're retrofitting data to the theory? Maybe somebody with more experience with these studies can explain what that means."

I suggest you all check out the following paper. You can infer a great deal about morality from the conclusions of this paper. They aren't neccessarily in favor of religion. Also; this paper is being misrepresented by theists who wish to attempt to prove that religion provides morality.
