About Me:
I'm a curious person by nature, and obsessively ask why something works (or doesn't), how it functions, what's the logic underlying a given idea/notion/theory; and most often, why there's so much cruelty and inequity in the world. And given my line of work, this habit of mind has occasionally caused me trouble.

I am a Soldier by profession, with a B.A. in Political Science from Berkeley, and a J.D. from Syracuse University. I'm licensed to practice law in California and another state, and I did so for ~6 years as a commercial litigator. I left private practice for the military because I grew disillusioned with chasing billable hours, and because I wanted my efforts to make some quantum of difference to both myself and others. In spite of some common assumptions regarding my profession, I am socially Liberal, and am generally opposed to war (though I don't view Pacifism as a realistic option). I've reconciled my Liberal views with military service by adhering to a strict ethical code, by maintaining an independent concept of right and wrong, and by speaking up when I see something that isn't right. However, I've chosen to do so from inside the organization (where I can sometimes shape outcomes) rather than outside the organization (where protest, no matter how well-meaning, is of questionable utility in my view). This has not been a particularly easy path, but ease has never been my prime motivator. [And thus far, all of my legal and policy debates have remained within the organization, so you should not find my name attached to any controversies in the press.] I could write more, but for big-picture purposes, this pretty well covers it.

I haven't been here to long myself, but I think you will find this site much more enjoyable than Harris'. That site attracted a lot of wackos. No reflection on Sam, of course! This place is better. There are many really thoughtful people here.

It has been a long time, man. I retired from the Marine Corps Reserves in 08... Glad you are still fighting the good fight!
