Magic and science: what can be tested for and what can be explained?

I had a debate tonight with a friend of mine who is into magic. He was talking about a new book he'd gotten which was set up in a class format. Apparently it was originally presented as a college class, then a mail order course, and finally a book. And of course it became more sophisticated along it's evolutionary journey because it could "include information they couldn't include in a college setting or in the mail order course". (I'm paraphrasing my friend's words here) This all seems a bit…See More

About Me:
I was born into a Christian household, and was raised in Evangelical Christianity. As long as I can remember I have seen inconsistencies, and absurdities within religion. And one of the first things I learned about religion, is that you do not ask questions. But I have never been one to be satisfied with faith, and always had questions; always analyzing in order to fully understand. After many years of asking questions, and earnestly trying to find the answers to those questions, I became an atheist.

Why are you here?
I have been learning all my life, and I never plan to stop. And while I have learned a lot, I still have a lot of things to learn, and feel I could understand many things even better than I do currently. I am here in order to engage in discussion with others who are also earnestly trying to understand this world, that I may better my own understanding. I also know that, while I have made significant headway in trying to look at the world through the eyes of logic and reason, that there are still long ingrained habits of thought which are inhibiting this goal. I hope that through discussion of ideas, I may better be able to analyze my own beliefs, and rational in order to better myself.

Why you left your religion.
Many of the options available could apply. For instance, "disillusionment with the church" is a large part of what got the ball rolling for me. More specifically seeing the hypocrisy, and the almost endless number of contradictions contained in the Bible. But probably the most influential aspect in my life was this tendency of the church to praise faith, and admonish reason and honest inquiry. I could never get over the fact that any time I asked an honest question about the Bible, I was immediately castigated, and the question was dismissed as being the influence of the devil, trying to confuse me and draw me away from god.

First off, welcome to the site!

Second, you have a blog awaiting approval.  I have no issues with approving it, but seeing as you're asking a question, you might want to consider making it a forum discussion.  It will be easier to have a dialogue with other members that way.

If you would rather keep it as a blog, let me know and I'll approve it.

Kris
