Heather Spoonheim commented on Skepticlese's blog post 'Is "Spirituality" Any Different Than Religion?'
"Yes, Stutz, and there is a LOT suggesting that the mind is nothing more than the result of the brain.  Virtually every aspect of human personality, cognition, and behavior can, and has been observed to, change upon injury to some particular…"

Stutz commented on Skepticlese's blog post 'Is "Spirituality" Any Different Than Religion?'
"I like what Heather hinted at in her initial response: if you can't imagine what the point of this life is, what, then, do you suppose the point of an afterlife would be? Clearly it's an emotionally driven belief. The obvious thing that…"

Suzanne Olson-Hyde commented on Skepticlese's blog post 'Is "Spirituality" Any Different Than Religion?'
"People find it really hard to think once they are dead - that's it. All the knowledge, experiences, feelings of love for people, no more sunrises or sunsets - all finito, never to be felt again. I believe once you are dead, you are dead - no…"

Heather Spoonheim commented on Skepticlese's blog post 'Is "Spirituality" Any Different Than Religion?'
"Yes, well I really hate magical thinking and generally will not tolerate it being expressed, unopposed, in my presence.  That being said, I know some people have a lot riding on the idea of an afterlife, and I usually try to ask them what it is…"

Skepticlese commented on Skepticlese's blog post 'Is "Spirituality" Any Different Than Religion?'
"Heather--thanks. I think you're right that it's an emotional response to mortality. Perhaps pointing that out (gently, as you recommend) is a good way to go. We all like to think we're rational beings (there's certainly a…"

Heather Spoonheim commented on Skepticlese's blog post 'Is "Spirituality" Any Different Than Religion?'
"I think that choosing to disregard facts in order to maintain a belief for emotional reasons is unhealthy.  The only evidence I've seen in terms of mind/brain duality seems to indicate that there is no mind/brain duality.  It is…"

Is "Spirituality" Any Different Than Religion?

I had a heated debate with my more intelligent other this weekend about our respective beliefs. She's about as non-religious as anyone I know, but declines to believe that death is the beginning of one's non-existence. "If so, then what purpose does life have if this is all there is?" she asks. I, for one, believe that because life is indeed so short, we need to take responsibility for it and try to leave the world a little better than it was when you got here. But for her, the notion that…See More

Skepticlese commented on LaRae Meadows's group 'Atheist Humor'
"Apropos Atheist Anagrams for All Occasions. People like to find hidden meaning in the wierdest places (like the Bible, for instance). So I'm collecting 666 anagrams (or some multiple thereof) with deeper, hidden meaaning. Like the…"

Skepticlese replied to Robert Karp's discussion 'What is your personal verse?'
"Skepticlese 3:13: "An anagram of "faith" is "hi fat," so it can't be that good for you." Skepticlese 1:4 "Ours is not to question why, preach the priests without debate and who retort “Why not?” as…"

Skepticlese commented on Robert Karp's blog post 'Cee-Lo Disrepects John Lennon at New Year Celebration'
"Most of the main stream media missed the point, too--reporting on the whining of Lennon fans who were simply pissed off that he would dare to change the words to an "icon's" song. If that were all, I wouldn't really care.…"

CHRISTMAS MIRACLES OR GOD'S PSYCHOSES?

What is the fascination with "Christmas Miracles?" Is this simply ignorant reporters searching for a catchy headline in order to draw readers to their story or is there more to it? It seems that always around Christmas the number of divine interventions increases. These alleged "miracles" make the headlines and perpetuate the silly notion that God has somehow stepped maneuvered in on the affairs of mere mortals and made something a little better. But here's the rub: most of the time, the…See More

"Pearl Harbor surprise: Photo of female firefighters wasn't from Dec. 7"--What Can We Learn from This?

Posted on December 13, 2011 at 4:23pm 1 Comment

Bill Dedman, an investigative reporter for MSNBC, has written an article on a photograph that many books and news organizations, including MSNBC, mistakenly characterized as women firefighters trying to put out a fire immediately after the attack on Pearl Harbor. Indeed, the caption from the original MSBC photoblog on the 70th anniversary…

What a good story. It's pretty cool that in a time of crisis you were able to find strength within yourself. I think that is a difficult thing to do. Thanks for sharing your story and welcome!
